Press release ufficiale:

Norwegian opens a new base in Madrid and continues to expand its Spanish route network

Norwegian continues to expand in Europe and will open a new base of operations in Madrid in summer 2014. Along with the new base, the company also launches six new routes from Madrid to Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg, Warsaw and London.

The new base in Madrid is Norwegian’s fifth base in Spain, along with Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas and Tenerife.

“We have decided to open a new base in Madrid to meet the demand for direct flights between the Spanish capital and important cities in Europe. We see a major passenger potential from the main airport in Madrid. At the same time, it is strategically important for Norwegian to have a base in the Spanish capital in light of our presence in the Spanish market and not least, in term of our future plans,” says Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.

“Norwegian’s entry to Madrid Barajas airport is excellent news for all Madrilenians. The company is growing rapidly through offering quality, more environmentally friendly flights at a low fare. The regional Government of Madrid is indeed proud that Norwegian has chosen our airport to increase its expansion in Europe. Madrid has a unique offer for tourists and companies worldwide, and thanks to Norwegian the region's connectivity will certainly be improved,” said Ignacio González, President of Region of Madrid Ignacio González.

Two aircraft based in Madrid and six new, direct routes

Norwegian will base two Boeing 737-800 aircraft at its base in Madrid. In addition, the company will recruit 70 pilots and 140 cabin crew locally and launch six new routes that will start operating during summer 2014.
