Malaysia Airlines Berhad has secured its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the country's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in time for a September 1 'relaunch' of Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l). Launched in July, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (NewCo) is a vehicle for the migration of Malaysia Airlines' relevant operations, assets and liabilities after its predecessor Malaysian Airline System Berhad (MAS) was placed into receivership in May.

“We would like to thank the Director General of DCA, Dato’ Sri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman for this very important milestone," MAB’s CEO Designate Christoph Mueller said. "The AOC is a testament to all our staff at Malaysia Airlines who have been working hard to fulfill all the necessary requirements and specifications by DCA. We are very excited and focused on MAB's take-off in September.”

The move is part of Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund Khazanah's 12-point strategy to revitalize the struggling national carrier which between 2010 and 2013, racked up losses of USD1.3 billion. In line with its launch this week, Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) has already rehired a more streamlined staff compliment of approximately 14,000 from the soon-to-be-defunct MAS's reserve of 20,000.

MH chiuderà anche AMS e CDG, lasciando LHR come unica destinazione europea. Il vecchio continente sarà servito grazie al nuovo accordo con EK, che via DXB permetterà di servire decine di località europee. Sembra un Qantas-bis.

Malaysia Airlines to partner with Emirates

Published: 02/12/2015

Malaysia Airlines’ (MAB) future plans for Europe are now becoming clearer.
This evening MAB has announced that it will retain London Heathrow as its sole European destination. It now intends to axe Amsterdam and Paris CDG by the end of January.
MAB has agreed to a partnership with Emirates which resembles the deal struck between Qantas and Emirates a couple of years ago.
In the case of Europe, MAB will now rely on Emirates for its European network coverage.
Code-sharing with Emirates via Dubai enables MAB to offer one-stop service to 38 destinations in the UK, mainland Europe and Scandinavia.
It is unclear whether or not MAB will retain its service between Kuala Lumpur and Dubai or whether it will rely solely on Emirates.
Currently MAB rosters a single daily A330-300 for Dubai which is an improvement on its previous B777-200 service. But Emirates offers far more capacity between these two cities. It operates five daily flights, four of which are with larger B777-300ERs and one with the A380.
However Europe is only part of the new MAB route network.
Its link with Emirates opens up many new opportunities. MAB can now offer connections over Dubai to 15 destinations in the Americas along with 38 in the Middle East, Africa and Indian Ocean.
As an example, MAB will now be able to offer one-stop service from Kuala Lumpur to New York, Johannesburg or Sao Paulo to name just a few.
For the first time this link with Emirates will make MAB truly competitive with its nearby rival SIA.
SIA is one of the world’s finest airlines but on its own it can offer nowhere near the global coverage as can the MAB/Emirates partnership.

Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) says it will open seven new local crew bases across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in a bid to decentralize its B737-800 fleet operations away from its Kuala Lumpur Int'l hub.

Outlining progress made so far under its restructuring programme, the Malaysian national carrier said it would reposition a total of eighteen B737-800s to new bases in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri,Labuan, Kota Bharu, Penang and Johor Bahru in March of next year. The move is expected to not only cut crew costs by reducing the need to overnight crew in regional cities, but will also improve B737 utilization rates from 15% to 20%.

"The move will improve connectivity and service quality on the domestic network and emphasizes the airline’s commitment to the respective states, boosting local economies and fostering inbound tourism," it said in a statement.

To help foster its domestic growth plans, the carrier has also asked government to extend a contract with the Ministry of Transport to provide rural air services in the provinces of Sabah and Sarawak.

The carrier's turnaround plan, spearheaded by Malaysian sovereign wealth fund Khazanah, has placed greater emphasis on Malaysia Airlines finding a niche in the domestic and regional markets both of which hinge on its fleet of fifty-six B737-800 narrowbody aircraft. According to CAPA, Malaysia Airlines is currently renegotiating its B737 leasing rates and even has the option, under the MAS Act, to cancel any it does not require.

Causa non specificate misure di sicurezza, Malaysia Airlines sospende la possibilita' di spedire il bagaglio in stiva sui rimanenti voli europei

Malaysia Airlines suspends checked baggage to Europe

Malaysia Airlines abruptly put a temporary suspension on all checked baggage on its flights to Europe, citing strong head winds and safety concerns.
In an initial statement issued on Jan. 5, Malaysia Airlinessaid it was only able to carry hand luggage on services from Kuala Lumpur to Europe. Passengers can still check in luggage, but it will be sent “later”, on a separate flight “as soon as the situation permits”.
“In the interest of safety, Malaysia Airlines currently operates a long route to Europe via Egypt airspace, which combined with strong head winds, is delaying flights and limiting the airline’s baggage capacity. This longer flight path consumes more jet fuel and for safety reasons, Malaysia Airlines has had to impose a temporary limitation on checked-in baggage,” Malaysia Airlines said.
The restriction initially affected the carrier’s Amsterdam, London and Paris services, although normal baggage allowances have since been restored on its Airbus A380-operated London route. “Baggage limitations however, still apply for flights to Amsterdam and Paris on Jan. 5-6, 2016,” the airline said.
The airline did not explain why there were no longer any concerns for London flights, while Amsterdam and Paris flights were still affected by the ban, even though the distances between those airports is negligible on those long-haul routes.
No other airlines in Asia or Europe are reporting weight-and-fuel concerns related to headwinds and Malaysia is the only airline to issue a baggage restriction.
Under Malaysia Airlines' temporary policy change, which took effect on Jan. 5, economy passengers have been limited to a single 7kg item of hand luggage and business- and first-class passengers can carry two items not exceeding 7kg each.
Malaysia Airlines cautioned that travelers transferring from other oneworld memberairlines could have their baggage offloaded.
The airline did not give any timings for dropping the temporary limits, but said it would “continue to assess the changing situation over the region and update passengers when operations are back to normal”.
A further update is expected at 0100GMT/0900 Malaysian local time on Jan. 6.

Malaysia Airlines CEO Mueller to step down in September

Malaysia Airlines Berhad CEO Christoph Mueller has said he will resign in September, citing “changing personal circumstances.”
The unexpected announcement comes less than a year after Mueller took over the top executive spot at Malaysia Airlines. The former Aer Lingus CEO known for turning around airlines was named CEO of Malaysia Airlines in late 2014 as the carrier was dealing with the aftermath of two fatal Boeing 777 crashes—flights MH370 and MH17—and took the position on May 1, 2015.
He said he was treating Malaysia Airlines as a startup carrier and the airline’s operations, assets and liabilities were shifted to a new company, Malaysia Airlines Berhad, which officially launched on Sept. 1, 2015 with a new air operator’s certificate (AOC). Malaysia Airlines Berhad said late last year it would pare down operations at its Kuala Lumpur International Airport hub as part of a reorganization and it agreed to a strategic partnership with Emirates Airline.
Malaysia Airlines Berhad chairman Md Nor Yusof said in an April 19 statement, “We are very disappointed to lose Christoph as CEO, but we fully understand his reasons and respect his need to do this.” He said the search for a new CEO was underway.
Mueller said in a statement that he was “proud of what we have achieved as a team in such a short time and that the hard work of all of our employees is already showing the first signs of success.” He added, “The airline has been restructured and repositioned to regain its leading position … I am confident that the company is now on the right track to succeed in its next phase of growth under a new chief executive.”

Malaysia Airlines mulls new widebody order

Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) is considering placing a new order for up to twenty-five widebody aircraft airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Bellew has said in an interview.

According to The Star newspaper, Bellew said the A330 and A350 Families from Airbus Industrie (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) were currently under consideration along with the B787 from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare). A decision is due by the middle to end of next year, he said.

“I am short of widebody aircraft,” Bellew said. Besides the current Kuala Lumpur-London flights, “we won’t do other long-haul routes until 2020, 2021 because the aircraft will be available at the right price, at the right time and at the right configuration.”

The aircraft will be used to replace fifteen of its older A330-300s while catering to longterm growth.

Aside from the fifteen A330s and six A380-800s, Malaysia Airlines currently has six A350-900s and two A330-900neo due to arrive on lease from Air Lease Corporation next year. The carrier plans to replace the A380-800s on flights to London Heathrow with A350s in April 2018, Bellew said.
