Peter Vittori, Managing Director Sales & Marketing for Caribbean/Latin America, American Airlines

Peter Vittori has enjoyed a long career with American Airlines, the world’s third largest airline. It is under his direction that Latin America has grown to be one of the most profitable regions in the American system. The region continues to be a stronghold for American, offering more flights to more destinations than any other airline. Miami is American’s third largest hub, based on American and American Eagle flights, and is a gateway to the Southern Hemisphere and the Caribbean, with the Latin America/Mexico route system encompassing 40 destinations in 17 countries.
Peter Vittori believes that much of American’s success in Latin America can be attributed to its employees –almost all of whom are nationals of the countries they work in. They are responsible for developing ties to the local communities, governments and business leaders, and for opening the marketplace to American.Italian in origin, his education began at St. Stephen’s International School in Rome, followed by Loyola University in Chicago. However, all of American’s many destinations in Latin America have increasingly become his home.

Goodmorning Mr. Vittori and welcome on AviazioneCivile.it!

Grazie! It is great to have a chance to tell you a little about American Airlilnes’ service.

American Airlines regularly operates a year-round flight between Milan MXP and New York JFK, two seasonal flights from Rome FCO to Chicago ORD and New York JFK, while a brand new flight between Milan MXP and Miami will be inaugurated next week. What type of customer will benefit from this flight? Which kind of traffic – business, leisure, ethnic - do you forecast to serve?

We know that there will be a mix of customers who will use the service. Of course, Milan and Miami are both great leisure destinations- and we expect that customers from Italy will fly to Miami as a vacation destination, and vice-versa. This is also expected to be a busy business travel route. For example, the fashion industry in Miami is growing- as it is in many Latin American cities like Bogota. We also have an increasing number of Italian furniture designers in Miami. We expect this route to be able to connect business travelers from all three continents.

Is the decision to operate this flight based on the closure of Alitalia seasonal flight? The flight was supposed to start as a seasonal flight, now it’s turned into a year-round flight. On which basis do you think it will be successful?

We look at a variety of factors when evaluating possible routes including customer demand. While, for competitive reasons, I can’t tell you all of the factors that went into selecting this destination; I can tell you that we do strongly believe it will be successful. Our customers are very pleased with this new offering.

The flight will be operated by a Boeing 767-300ER that is undergoing a new reconfiguration. When will it operate the flight from Milan to Miami?
The flight will begin to operate on November 21[SUP]st[/SUP]. It will be one daily flight in each direction. From Milan, the flight will depart at 11:25 am, landing in Miami at 4:40 pm. In the other direction, it will depart Miami at 5:55pm, arriving in Milan at 8:00 am on the following day. The reconfiguration of American’s fleet of 767s will begin in the first quarter of 2014. It is too early to tell when the new configuration will begin on this route.

Miami Airport is your main gateway to Caribbean and South America. Considering how relevant is the South American population in Milan metropolitan area, which are the final destinations via Miami Airport within 3 hours after landing? Do you plan to put a code-share on connection flights from/to Milan MXP, in particular on OW airlines’ flights?
American’s hub at Miami International Airport offers 340 daily flights to more than 120 destinations across the globe- including destinations in South and Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and destinations within the United States. As the flight from Milan MXP arrives at 8:00am, customers have plenty of time to catch numerous connections throughout the day.

Last November 12th, the U.S. antitrust approved the merger between you and U.S. Airways under specific conditions, such as selling out a few slots in the seven most important airports in which American Airline and U.S. Airways operate. Could you anticipate the next steps after merging?

Completion of the merger remains subject to the approval of the settlements by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and certain other conditions. The companies now expect to complete the merger in December 2013. We are pleased to have this lawsuit behind us and look forward to building the new American.
The agreement allows us to take the final steps in creating the world’s largest airline, which will fly more travelers to more places than ever before. The new American will fly more than 6,700 flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries daily. Customers will have access to more choices and increased service across the new American’s larger worldwide network and through an enhanced oneworld® Alliance.

Emirates has recently started its own flight between Milan and New York JFK. Since also Alitalia and Delta operate the same route, do you think there is enough demand on this route or not?

This has traditionally been a very popular route among our customers although, I can’t really speculate regarding other airlines.

American Airline is involved in a major renovation process on marketing, staff and in particular on the fleet. How many and which aircrafts do you have in order? When will they be introduced into your fleet?

American is building toward the youngest and most modern fleet among major U.S. carriers. The airline has more than 500 new planes scheduled to join the fleet, including continued deliveries of the Boeing 737 family of aircraft and new additions such as the Boeing 777-300ER and the Airbus A320 family of aircraft. In addition, we are refreshing our existing aircraft to bring our customers a more modern, comfortable and connected experience. We're taking delivery of one new plane a week, on average.
Below all of the questions you can find our current breakdown of the fleet. You can find out more about our new planes in the following link: www.aa.com/newplanes.

In addition to Rome and Milan, do you plan to operate flights from any other Italian airport or are you satisfied with the current routes?

We are constantly evaluating new route opportunities around the world; however, at this time, we have no new routes to/from Italy to announce but, are please to begin this new service connecting two great cities.

Thank-you for your time, it was greatly appreciated. We wish you continued success in building your airline and we look forward to hearing more about American Airlines in the future.

Grazie!

Ottimo lavoro, grazie.:)

Re: *** LE INTERVISTE DI AC : DIRECTOR SALES & MARKETING CARIBBEAN/LATIN AMERICA AA *

Grazie mille Presidente! ottima intervista come sempre. Le domande sono state chiare, anche se ho notato che alcune risposte sono rimaste un pò sul vago. Nel senso: So, ma per ovvie ragioni aziendali non posso dire tutto(e ci mancherebbe).

Prima Volotea,Finnair e ora AA! Il prossimo chi sarà? Willie Walsh?:D

Re: *** LE INTERVISTE DI AC : DIRECTOR SALES & MARKETING CARIBBEAN/LATIN AMERICA AA *

Tim Clark. Che annuncerà in anteprima mondiale l'ordine EK per 100 Boeing 779. :D

Re: *** LE INTERVISTE DI AC : DIRECTOR SALES & MARKETING CARIBBEAN/LATIN AMERICA AA *

Una cosa a cui non ha risposto sono i code share lato MXP. Da quello che so quasi sicuramente Finnair piazzerà il CS sul volo AA fino a HEL.

Re: *** LE INTERVISTE DI AC : DIRECTOR SALES & MARKETING CARIBBEAN/LATIN AMERICA AA *

Well done! Molto vago, tra l'altro, sulla decisione di aprire la rotta dopo la chiusura di AZ.

I don't think so :D
