L’Arabia Saudita concede per la prima volta il proprio spazio aereo per i voli verso Israele

Il primo collegamento autorizzato è quello fra New Delhi e Tel Aviv

Con una decisione storica, l’Arabia Saudita ha deciso di concedere per la prima volta il proprio spazio aereo per i voli verso Israele. Il primo collegamento autorizzato è quello fra New Delhi e Tel Aviv, gestito da Air India. La notizia è stata rivelata da fonti del ramo aeronautico al quotidiano israeliano Haaretz. In questo modo il tempo di volo fra le due città si accorcerà di due ore e mezzo, dalle otto attuali a cinque e mezzo. La compagnia risparmierà anche carburante e potrà ridurre i costi dei biglietti.

Le relazioni fra India e Israele sono sempre più strette, dopo la visita del premier Narendra Modi in Israele l’anno scorso, ricambiata a gennaio dal premier Benjamin Netanyahu in India. Ma la decisione ha anche un impatto politico fortissimo in Medio Oriente. L’Arabia Saudita non ha ancora relazioni ufficiali con lo Stato ebraico, ma negli ultimi tre anni, dall’ascesa del principe ereditario Mohammed bin Salman, i due Paesi stanno formando una alleanza sempre più stretta in funzione anti-Iran. La collaborazione fra i servizi, per esempio, è ormai acclarata, anche se smentita ufficialmente, e lo stesso Bin Salman l’hanno scorso ha visitato, in incognito, Israele.

Il volo fra Tel Aviv e New Delhi era garantito finora solo da El Al e ha seguito fino a oggi la rotta lungo il Mar Rosso fino allo Yemen, per poi virare verso Est e l’India. Air India aveva già chiesto in passato di poter effettuare il collegamento, ma su una rotta più breve. La questione è stata affrontata anche nel viaggio di Netanyahu in India lo scorso mese e adesso è arrivata l’approvazione da parte dell’Arabia Saudita. Per il premier è un successo anche di immagine, perché cementa l’alleanza sia con l’India che con i sauditi.

Nell'articolo si parla di concessione al momento solo per Air India, ma non per El Al, dove quest'ultima si vede ovviamente penalizzata visto che il volo verso l'India dura al momento 8 ore invece delle 5:30 sorvolando l'Arabia Saudita.

Saudi civil aviation authority denies allowing Air India to fly over Saudi Arabia on planned Israel route

JERUSALEM/NEW DELHI: Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority on Wednesday denied granting permission to Indian planes to use the kingdom’s airspace to cross into Israel.
A spokesman for the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) in Saudi Arabia that the Authority did not grant any permission to fly India, Al Arabiya television reported.
Air India said on Wednesday it plans to begin direct flights to Israel and has proposed they pass through Saudi airspace, a route so far off-limits to Israel-bound commercial planes.
Saudi Arabia does not recognize Israel and lifting the 70-year-old airspace ban would reflect what appears to be thawing ties between Israel and the kingdom, both US allies with a shared concern over Iranian influence in the region.
An Air India spokesman and Israel’s Airports Authority said the state-run carrier had requested slots for three weekly flights between New Delhi and Tel Aviv. The Airports Authority said the service would begin in early March.
Air India was awaiting clearance from the Indian aviation regulator to fly over Saudi Arabia, the spokesman said.
However, Israeli media, in unsourced reports, said Riyadh had granted the necessary flyover rights, which would shorten the flight time from New Delhi by more than two hours.
India and Israel have built close ties over the years, largely centered on arms purchases, away from the public eye.
But under Narendra Modi, whose nationalist party has long admired Israel for its tough approach to terrorism, ties have flowered across the economy and last year he made a first-ever visit to Israel by an Indian prime minister.
And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited India last month, the first such trip in 15 years.
El Al Israel Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, flies four weekly flights to Mumbai but these take seven hours rather than five as they take a route south toward Ethiopia and then east to India, avoiding Saudi airspace.
Israel’s Tourism Ministry said it will grant Air India 750,000 euros for flying the new route, as part of its policy of increasing the number of airlines flying to Israel.
Air India had made a similar request for slots to Israeli authorities last year but never followed through, after that circumventing Saudi airspace was not economically viable.
Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is in Riyadh for an official visit.

Air India allowed by Saudi to use its airspace to fly to Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu

Air India has been allowed by Saudi Arabia to fly over its territory on its new route from New Delhi to Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today, an unprecedented move which would reduce travel time between the two cities by two and a half hours.
India's national carrier Air India is scheduled to begin its direct flight between New Delhi and Tel Aviv in few weeks from now.
Interacting with reporters after his meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, Netanyahu said that Air India has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia over the matter.
"Air India signed an agreement today to fly to Israel over Saudi Arabia," Netanyahu said.
So far Saudi Arabia has not allowed planes from any country to fly over it and go to Israel.
Israel does not have diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia, but it was reported that the two nations have been working covertly on their shared security concerns over Iran after the 2015 nuclear accord, which both governments strongly opposed.
Such a permission by Saudi Arabia would reduce the air travel time from New Delhi to Tel Aviv by Air India from about eight hours to five and a half hours, Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu said that as a result of the short travel of Air India, the Israeli national carrier El Al would be at disadvantage both in terms of cost and travel time.
He said he is in talks with the national carrier so that it is not hurt economically.
Meanwhile in New Delhi, an Air India spokesperson reacting to Prime Minister Netanyahu's statement said, "We are yet to receive any communication from the Indian regulator."
Air India has sought permission from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for thrice-a-week flight from Delhi to Tel Aviv.
Israel's Ministry of Tourism will approve a one-time grant of 750,000 euros to Air India to launch the flight service, an official said in Jerusalem last month.

El Al withdraws legal challenge over off-limits air routes

Israeli flag-carrier El Al is withdrawing a legal petition filed in response to Air India’s new route to Tel Aviv from Delhi.
Air India has been able to operate through airspace off-limits to El Al, and the Israeli carrier had objected to the competitive disadvantage.
But El Al states that, following discussions with the High Court of Justice on 18 July, it is to withdraw the petition.
El Al has not detailed the reason for its decision, but local reports state that the move follows advice over the case from the court. FG
