New Delhi, Nov. 23: State-owned International carrier, Air India is all set to join the Star Alliance, a global alliance of various international airlines.

Air India sources said that December 31 will be the target for joining the alliance.

The move is expected to give Air India a larger global reach. The Star Alliance, formed in 1997, includes airlines such as Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Royal Thai Airways, Air Canada, Air New Zealand and Asiana Airlines.

"Air India will gain in terms of sharing of resources and a larger range of destinations that its passengers can reach," sources said. Formation of global alliances has become the norm in the international aviation sector and is seen as necessary to tackle competition in critical sectors.

Air India’s move to join Star Alliance comes in the wake of two developments. The state-owned international carrier will soon add 68 aircraft from American aviation giant Boeing to its fleet.

Air India has been facing shortage of aircraft and this acquisition is expected to give a tremendous boost to the airline. The Government has also initiated steps to merge Air India and Indian, which is also acquiring 43 Airbus aircraft. The single entity that will emerge will be formidable and will also strengthen the Star Alliance. The Government has also fully supported Air India’s move to join the Star Alliance.
