Heathrow set to unveil options for £2.5bn savings on expansion plans


  • Heathrow identifies options which could reduce overall cost of expansion by £2.5 billion
  • Reduced cost options developed with input from airlines and will be consulted on in January
  • Savings would be delivered without compromising on Heathrow’s commitments to local communities or passenger experience

Heathrow has identified options that could enable delivery of an expanded hub airport for Britain for £2.5bn less than the plans submitted to the Airports Commission in 2015. The revised £14bn option would be delivered without compromising on Heathrow’s local commitments or passenger experience.
The proposals – which will be released in detail as part of Heathrow’s public planning consultation in January – have been developed in close cooperation with the airlines and would ensure that Heathrow expanded with airport charges staying close to today’s levels.

The options that would enable the identified £2.5bn cost reductions involve three things:

  • Repositioning new buildings over existing public transport and baggage infrastructure. This includes building additional capacity at both Terminals 2 and 5 rather than a dedicated terminal or satellite building between today’s northern runway and the new northwest runway
  • Technological advancements which reduce the amount of terminal space required to process passengers without compromising experience
  • More efficient phasing of capacity construction – incrementally increasing terminal capacity in blocks to better match growing demand

Heathrow’s Executive Director Expansion Emma Gilthorpe said:
“The Secretary of State set us the challenge to deliver an expanded airport for Britain with passenger charges staying close to current levels. We have now identified potential savings of £2.5bn and are increasingly confident we can meet the affordability challenge. We are looking forward to presenting detailed options on how to do it in our consultation in January, and while we will continue to work to reduce the cost of expansion, we will not compromise on our local commitments.”

Heathrow will be launching a 10-week public planning consultation which will run from 17th January to 28thMarch 2018. The consultation will give the public an opportunity to see and feedback on Heathrow’s expansion proposals. The consultation will be formed of two parts – the first on infrastructure design options for an expanded Heathrow and our approach to managing and reducing environmental and community impacts, while the second will focus on the future design principles for airspace around Heathrow.

In altre parole non faranno il 'terminal 6' (o come cavolo si sarebbe chiamato). E questo gli fa risparmiare 'solo' £2.5bn

Si, perche' alla fin fine non e' che il resto dell'aeroporto non verra' rimaneggiato pesantemente.

Il piano di HAL prevede che alcuni terminal raddoppino di capacita' - T5 a 70 mln di pax/anno, T2 a 60, T3 a non so piu' quanti ma parecchi - e questo costera' parecchio. I piani, che stanno gia' iniziando, sono veramente spinti e coprono qualsiasi ambito, soprattutto infrastrutturale. A regime LHR sara' l'aeroporto che muovera' piu' pax per metro quadro al mondo, per cui la ricerca dell'efficienza e' spinta al massimo, sotto ogni punto di vista.
 
Vada per la terza pista. Si vota l'11 Luglio!

Il governo britannico ha approvato il controverso piano per la costruzione di una terza pista di decollo nell’aeroporto londinese di Heathrow, dopo anni di discussioni. Il piano prevede lo stanziamento di 2,6 miliardi di sterline come risarcimento per i residenti dell’area, l’adozione di misure per l’abbattimento del rumore e per il mantenimento della qualità dell’aria entro certo parametri. Si prevede che la costruzione della pista – che secondo il governo sarà pagata interamente con fondi privati – sarà conclusa entro il 2026. Il piano, comunque, sarà votato dal Parlamento il prossimo 11 luglio.
Il dibattito sull’espansione dell’aeroporto di Heathrow va avanti da quasi 20 anni. L’idea fu appoggiata dall’ultimo governo laburista, rifiutata dal successivo governo conservatore, ma successivamente ripresa. Ancora oggi diversi parlamentari conservatori si oppongono al piano.

Sarò estremamente stupito se passerà. Buona parte dei Tories voterà contro, saranno fondamentali i si Labour e SNP. Inoltre credo non siano ancora arrivati i risultati della consultazione popolare, che immagino non saranno 'sto plebiscito.

A meno che non vogliano far vedere che hanno fiducia nella crescita dopo Brexit!
