New KLM gateway to the world at John Lennon Airport

DUTCH airline KLM today announced plans to link Liverpool John Lennon airport with 650 destinations around the globe.
In March next year the airline will launch three daily flights to Amsterdam’s Schipol airport.
Passengers can then transfer onto one of KLM’s 100 routes worldwide or 550 others operated by its 10 Sky Team partners including America’s Delta, Continental and Northwest Airlines, China Southern, Alitalia, Korean Air, Aeroflot and Czech Airlines.
Luggage is checked in at Liverpool and collected at the final destination.
JLA boss Neil Pakey said: “For people looking to experience new destinations and cultures across Asia, Africa or the Americas, KLM's offer at JLA will deliver this for Liverpool for the first time.”
The new route is due to launch on March 29, 2009, leaving Liverpool at 6.15am – followed by a 10.30am flight and a 5.30pm link. Seats go on sale tomorrow.
KLM originally flew from the city in 1934 but the link was axed in 1939 after the outbreak of Word War II.
KLM senior vice president Pieter Elbers said: “We are delighted to be renewing our partnership with Liverpool.
“By adding Liverpool to our network today KLM has further strengthened its position in the UK market, one of the most important markets in the extensive network of KLM.”
Today’s announcement follows more than a year of talks between JLA, inward investment and tourism agency The Mersey Partnership and KLM.
A Liverpool delegation put the city’s case for a link to KLM at its Amsterdam HQ this February.
Further talks led to a tour of JLA by senior KLM staff this September and meetings with key Liverpool business leaders, followed by further contact at last month’s Routes 2008 conference in Kuala Lumpur.
Mersey Partnership chief executive Lorraine Rogers said today: “This route will be a significant driver for further growth across our business sectors.
“Global connectivity also makes the location attractive for inward investment.”
