C'è il riassunto del preliminary report su AVHerald: e la flare?
At 1412:42 (1.6 seconds before touchdown), the aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 136 knots, and its ground speed was 111 knots. The aircraft was slightly below the glide slope, but on the visual segment of the approach and tracking the runway centreline. The rate of descent had increased to 1072 fpm, and the bank angle was 5.9° to the right.
Less than 1 second before touchdown, the aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 134 knots, and its ground speed was 111 knots. The bank angle was 7.1° to the right, and the pitch attitude was 1° nose up. The rate of descent was recorded as 1110 fpm.
At 1412:43.6, the right main landing gear (MLG) contacted the runway. The aircraft was in a 7.5° bank to the right with 1° of nose-up pitch and 3g vertical acceleration, at a rate of descent of approximately 1098 fpm (18.3 fps).

E' come sbattere contro un muro a 20 km/h, sono stati anche fortunati secondo me. Molto fortunati.
Se ben ricordo (correggetemi se sbaglio), un touchdown standard dovrebbe attestarsi infatti intorno ad una velocità verticale di 100 fpm, dieci volte meno!

Oddio, c'è anche chi ha fatto peggio, molto peggio di così, pur senza feriti (impatto a 4,2G).

La premessa interessante da fare è che la loro VREF era 139kts alla quale era stato aggiunto il massimo correttivo di 10 nodi, quindi l'obiettivo era mantenere 149kts di velocità indicata.

Poi:
– At 1412:40 (3.6 seconds before touchdown), when the aircraft was at a height of 50 feet AGL, the indicated airspeed was 145 knots
– One second later (2.6 seconds before touchdown) [...] The aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 136 knots
– Less than 1 second before touchdown, the aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 134 knots

Già partivano da 4 nodi lenti, poi si sono pure beccati dello windshear perdendone altri 9 in un secondo, per finire a VREF-meno-cinque.
Anche a volerla fare, la flare, il sistema non ha più energia a sufficienza così.

Mi ha ricordato un po' quest'altro incidente dove un 737 di Blue Air aveva incassato 3,83G per essersi ritrovato a VREF-meno-diciassette.
 
Intento il TSB sta portando le indagini ad un altro livello proprio!


Interessante che i piloti siano riusciti ad usare la botola collocata sul soffitto, nonostante fossero sottosopra.

Permettimi di non essere d'accordo: se 139 è la Vref (non conosco il 'carjuliet' ma mi sembra alta), vuol dire che era al 1,3 della VS. La correzione la fai per il vento, ma non mi sembra che la head wind component incida granché (era tutto cross se non ricordo male). Poi c'è l'effetto suolo, per quel tipo di aereo con ala molto bassa rispetto al suolo, si sente. Come scritto sopra la flair non è stata fatta/sufficiente.
La ground speed rimane costante: sinonimo di mancanza di shear.
Vedremo cosa sarà successo veramente dal racconto dei due.

Se non era windshear, poteva essere allora la raffica (che da sola faceva 8 nodi).
Però effettivamente strano che la GS non vari con la IAS.

Quello che non dice il preliminary report è perché sono arrivati a ciò. E i motivi potrebbero essere molti e non necessariamente legati alle capacità dei piloti.

È un preliminary e quindi la causa non è ovviamente ancora definita.
E stavolta nessuno ha detto sia colpa dei piloti, anzi, se rileggi i miei post qui sopra dico proprio di attendere il risultato delle indagini.

Vediamo un attimo le ultime fasi del volo:

At 1412:01, the aircraft descended through 500 feet above ground level (AGL). The aircraft’s indicated airspeed was 150 knots, its ground speed was 121 knots, and the engine thrust was indicating approximately 64% N1.
The rate of descent was 720 fpm, and the localizer and glide slope were centred. Five seconds later, the PF disconnected the autopilot.

Fin qui stiamo messi bene. L'avvicinamento è stabilizzato con gli automatismi inseriti.

At 1412:26, while the aircraft was descending through 175 feet AGL, its indicated airspeed was 144 knots, with a ground speed of 121 knots, and a rate of descent of 672 fpm. The thrust remained at approximately 64% N1.

Anche qui ancora una situazione stabile; si è perso qualche nodo ma siamo ancora a Vref + 5.

At 1412:30, while the aircraft was descending through 153 feet AGL, its indicated airspeed increased to 154 knots whereas the ground speed did not change appreciably, consistent with a performanceincreasing wind gust. The PF pulled back the thrust levers, and as a result, over the following 5 seconds, N1 decreased from 64% to approximately 43%, where it remained until touchdown. The airspeed began to decrease.

Qui è arrivata la raffichetta; La IAS aumenta di 10 nodi e, istintivamente, la PF tira indietro le manette a 43%. Una riduzione molto, forse troppo marcata (20% di N1) che probabilmente ha avuto rapidamente l'effetto di far crollare il variometro a parità di assetto.

The enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS) aural alert “fifty” sounded to indicate the aircraft was at 50 feet AGL, which is a standard callout.

Si passano i 50ft, e probabilmente la threshold della pista, ancora con le manette praticamente in tasca (non so quanto sia il motore del finale per il CRJ, ma se l'avvicinamento era stabilizzato poco prima, intorno al 64%, allora con 20 punti di meno stiamo messi male).

Ora mi soffermerei un attimo sui 1114 fpm a 50ft AGL. Con un minimo di esperienza è facile "sentire" quel variometro senza bisogno di guardare gli strumenti; la pista di avvicina molto più rapidamente del solito, senti con il "deretano" che l'aereo sta sprofondando.
Ci sta che la FO-PF con poca esperienza sia stata "sovraccaricata" da tutte queste sensazioni e da un avvicinamento più challenging del solito; chi doveva intervenire era il CPT-PM, prendendo i comandi ed iniziando una manovra di Baulked landing o di Windshear recovery in base all'occorrenza.
