2008 is proving to be yet another record year for Malta International Airport. On Wednesday afternoon, MIA celebrated its 3 millionth passenger movement with the arrival of flight KM101 from London Heathrow. Mr. Julian Jaeger CEO of MIA presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs. Bernie Mizzi who happened to be the passenger identified as the 3 millionth for 2008. This is the first time that MIA has reached this mark with the national carrier Air Malta having contributed well over 180,000 passengers on this London Heathrow route alone to MIA's traffic figures to date for this year. In 2007 passenger movements recorded at MIA for the twelve month period totalled 2.97 million whilst until end November of 2008 MIA is already registering a 5.3% increase despite the general global downturn trend in tourism. All this falls in line with the extensive expansion works which are currently taking place at the airport that should see a major transformation of the terminal concluded by summer 2009.
