Avianca, Grupo TACA to merge under holding company

Thursday October 8, 2009

Colombia's Avianca and El Salvador-based Grupo TACA announced yesterday that they have reached agreement to merge under a single holding company, creating an airline group that will serve more than 100 destinations with a fleet of 129 aircraft.
Avianca parent Synergy Group will control two-thirds of the unnamed holding company while TACA will control the remaining third, with TACA Chairman and CEO Roberto Kriete serving as chairman and Avianca CEO Fabio Villegas as CEO.
The two privately held carriers combined generate about $3 billion in annual revenue and employ 12,000. The combined network will serve 75 Latin American destinations with hubs in Bogota, Lima, San Salvador and San Jose, Costa Rica. The transaction is subject to approval from relevant regulatory authorities.
In a statement, the carriers said, "Avianca and TACA will preserve their respective brands and continue to operate separately under a common strategic vision."
Kriete, whose family long has controlled TACA, said the merger will give the airlines "breadth and scale to better compete with any player in our markets while ensuring our long-term success." Villegas called the announcement "a great day in the history of aviation. We are bringing together two of the world's oldest airlines. . .to create an industry leader."
TACA COO Estuardo Ortiz will become COO of the new entity while Avianca CFO Gerardo Grajales will serve as its CFO. No timeline was given for closing the transaction.

Importantissima fusione.

E adesso in SKYTEAM! ;)

Ciao

Avianca e Taca(El Salvador) si fondono

October 7, 2009
"The joining of the airlines is part of... what's happening in the industry. This puts us on par with Latin America's largest airlines," -- TACA CEO Roberto Kriete.
Colombian airline Avianca and El Salvador-based TACA said on Wednesday they will merge under a single holding company, cutting costs and bolstering their clout in Latin America.

Avianca's shareholders will control two thirds of the new company, with the other third in the hands of TACA owners, TACA chief executive Roberto Kriete told reporters in San Salvador.

He said the combined airlines would have annual sales of USD$3 billion but their brands would remain separate for now.

Hit by the economic slowdown, airlines around the world are struggling with weak demand and volatile fuel prices. Some have turned to acquisitions to increase economies of scale.

"The joining of the airlines is part of... what's happening in the industry," Kriete said. "This puts us on par with Latin America's largest airlines."

Avianca and TACA are privately held. Together they would have 129 planes and more than 100 destinations in the Americas and Europe, Avianca chief executive Fabio Villegas said at the news conference in the Salvadoran capital.

Avianca is controlled by Colombian-Brazilian businessman German Efromovich while TACA has been owned by the Kriete family since 1961.

TACA, which flies to 22 countries in the Americas and nine cities in the United States, was founded in 1931 as a one-plane operation with a contract to the Honduran government.

Other Latin American airlines have also been affected by the global downturn.

Mexico's AeroMexico is considering partial stock deals with local and international players, chief executive Andres Conesa said at event in Mexico City on Wednesday.

AeroMexico and rival Mexicana may not survive unless they merge with each other or smaller competitors, many experts warn.

Chilean airline LAN said in August it was interested in deals to help it expand in Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and Central America.

In Brazil, TAM has embarked on a strict cost-cutting programme.

Dall'aeronautica colombiana il sì all'accordo

(Guida Viaggi)
