Lufthansa CEO says acquisitions not a priority - report
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German flagship air carrier Deutsche Lufthansa AG wants to grow organically right now and acquisitions are not a priority, its chief executive said in a pre-release of his interview with a German newspaper.
"The restructuring of the company is paramount," Christoph Franz was quoted by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as saying in an interview to be published on Friday.
"We want to grow organically and straighten out our own business before we make any further acquisitions," he replied when asked if Lufthansa would be eager to acquire airlines such as Poland's LOT or Scandinavia's SAS .
Lufthansa, which bought Austrian Airlines, bmi, and Brussels Airlines in 2009, has been touted as a possible buyer for SAS as well as LOT.
Franz's predecessor, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, had also previously said Lufthansa would refrain from major acquisitions until it had integrated and turned around recent buys.
Commenting on Lufthansa's restructuring program, Franz said the company was well on track towards meeting its target to cut the costs of its passenger business by 1 billion euros (887 million pounds) by the end of this year.
He said there were no plans for any further cuts in personnel costs, but productivity of employees needs to improve.
