Launch of daily non-stop flights between Abu Dhabi and Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, from June 15, 2013.

JatAirways, Serbia’s national carrier, will place its ‘JU’ code on the new service, as well as to 21 destinations on the Etihad Airways network.

In return Etihad Airways will place its ‘EY’ code on 23 of JatAirways’ European flights.

The launch of the daily flights and the partnership development with JatAirways will cater to the significant and growing demand for air travel between the UAE and Serbia, as well as cities with large Serbian populations around the world, particularly in Australia and the US.

Among the many benefits the Belgrade service will bring is seamless connection with flights between Abu Dhabi and Melbourne and Sydney, supporting the strong historical and cultural links between Serbia and Australia.

There are more than 100,000 Australian citizens, mostly based in Melbourne and Sydney, of Serbian ancestry.

As part of the codeshare agreement, and subject to government and regulatory approval, JatAirways will place its JU code on Etihad Airways flights to Abu Dhabi and beyond to Bangkok, Beijing, Brisbane, Chengdu, Chicago, Colombo, Ho Chi Minh City, Islamabad, Johannesburg, Karachi, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait, Lahore, New York, Melbourne, Seychelles, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto, and Washington, D.C.

In return, subject to government and regulatory approval, Etihad will place the EY code on JatAirways flights between Belgrade and Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Rome, Frankfurt, Gothenburg, Istanbul, Heathrow, Larnaca, Milan, Moscow, Podgorica, Sarajevo, Skopje, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Thessaloniki, Tivat, Vienna and Zurich.

JatAirways will place its code on a number of the flights operated by Etihad Airways’ equity partner, airberlin. A major highlight of this would be the provision of a direct link for passengers travelling from Belgrade, via Berlin, to Chicago in the US.

The capital of Illinois is renowned for having the second largest Serbian population of any city in the world, with an estimated 200,000 Serb nationals living in Chicago, and up to 500,000 residents of Serb origin.

Belgrade will become the third of six new destinations to be served by Etihad Airways in 2013, following the launch in March of flights to Washington, D.C., and in May to Amsterdam. Services will commence later this year to Sao Paulo, Brazil; Sana'a, Yemen; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Jat Airways (JU, Belgrade) is set to be taken over by Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi Int'l) after Belgrade accepted the Emirati-carrier's offer. The announcement was made by Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić. According to Serbian daily “Večernje novosti”, with a takeover agreement in place, Etihad could take control of Jat as early as August 1 with a rebranding to Air Serbia (Belgrade) due on October 27. Meanwhile, EX-YU Aviation News states that the new Etihad-appointed CEO of Jat, part of a three-man delegation, has arrived in Belgrade and has already conducted various talks with government and airline departments. Air Serbia will serve as a successor to Jat, as opposed to a new company, thereby inheriting all its routes, assets, rights and debts, though this does mean the demise of the Jat brand after 66 years in existence.

Re: Etihad prende controllo di JAT: dalla W13 rebranding come Air Serbia

L'acquisizione di Jat da parte di Etihad fa parte di un più vasto piano di investimenti in Serbia da parte di società degli Emirati.

Comunque:

The end of the Jat brand
The Jat name to be retired from late October

The Jat brand name is set to become history later this year after 66 years of continual use. According to reliable sources, Etihad Airways, which plans to take control of the Serbian national carrier, is insisting on changing the airline’s name with Air Serbia proposed as its replacement. Serbian media have recently begun questioning the sentimental value of Jat, once the tenth busiest airline in Europe and the 31st busiest IATA member. The “JAT” brand was introduced following World War Two. The recognisable “egg” livery first appeared in the 1950s. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia and the easing of international sanctions on Yugoslav air travel, the “flame/wing” livery was introduced, in 1994. Finally, in 2003, as the name Yugoslavia became history and the country was renamed to Serbia and Montenegro the airline changed its name to Jat Airways and introduced the “dot” livery created by a Slovenian design team, selected through an international competition.

However, Jat is not expected to disappear in its entirety. The callsign of Serbia’s national carrier is set to remain “JAT” while its IATA designator is to remain “JU”. This is in order for the newly named carrier to maintain international agreement, slots, and assets owned by Jat Airways.

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways and the Serbian government reached an agreement on Friday for the Emirati carrier to take over Jat’s 1998 order for eight Airbus A319, which have never been delivered. Etihad’s involvement in the deal will allow for a speedy delivery of the aircraft. On the other hand, the Serbian government will take over the debt accumulated by Jat over the past two decades to the tune of 180 million euros, giving the Serbian carrier a fresh, debt free, start. Etihad is also interested in taking over Jat Tehnika and Jat Catering, the airline’s mechanical and catering divisions which were separated from the company in 2004 by the government.

Etihad has suggested Danny Kondić as the new CEO of the Serbian national carrier. Mr. Kondić, born in Australia to Serbian parents, started his career with Qantas in Sydney and worked for British Airways as well before becoming the General Manager of Worldwide Sales for Malaysia Airlines. He subsequently moved to take on the challenge of managing a travel agency, and was heading the North Asia region for a major wholesaler, based in Hong Kong.
