Dubai Air Show: airBaltic takes lead on Bombardier CS300

Latvian national carrier airBaltic will be the launch customer for the CS300 version of Bombardier’s CSeries, the manufacturer announced at the Dubai Air Show Nov. 8.
The airline’s CEO, Martin Gauss, has long been an enthusiast for the delayed Canadian narrowbody as a replacement for its Boeing 737-300s and -500s.
Recent concerns on the status of both the aircraft and Bombardier’s future in commercial aviation generally led him to seek reassurances from the Montreal-based company. These seem to have been given, leading to his decision to become launch customer for the larger model.
Lead customer for the baseline CS100 is Swiss; a CS100 in the latter company’s livery is on display at Dubai.
At the show, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft (BCA) president Fred Cromer told journalists that the flight test process for the regional jet was now virtually complete: “Just a couple more flights and a few more days and we’ll make the announcement,” he said.
The company was on schedule to achieve CS100 certification by year-end, he added.
Bombardier has previously said that interest in the program has grown in recent months as potential clients – notably since the Paris Air Show in June, where it was in the flying display – have seen the aircraft ‘in the flesh’ and the end of the certification process has neared.
Deliveries to Swiss will start in the first half of 2016, with the CS300 entering service six months later.
Talking to Middle East journalists, Cromer declined to say which of the CSeries’ local customers would be the first to receive the 110-150 seater. Currently, Gulf Air, SaudiGulf Airlines, Iraqi Airways and Falcon Aviation Services have signed up for the aircraft.
Questions were raised about a potential Jordanian order. Petra Airlines signed a letter of intent for two aircraft but, since then, the airline has become Air Arabia Jordan. Sharjah-based Air Arabia operates an all-Airbus fleet of more than 40 A320s.
John Kassis, BCA vice-president, Middle East and Africa sales, would say only that negotiations were continuing with Air Arabia. “It’s a good opportunity for us to expand discussions,” he said.

Re: Dubai air show

(Monday, Nov. 9, 16:25) Deal Alert: Airbus said on Monday International Airlines Group (IAG) - the parent holding company of British Airways, Spanish carrier Iberia and Ireland's Aer Lingus - has firmed up orders for 19 additional widebody and single aisle aircraft - 2 A330-200s, 2 A330-300s and 15 A320neos. In a statement coinciding with the Dubai Air Show, Airbus said the agreement with IAG and its airlines took their cumulative Airbus orders to a total of nearly 470 aircraft. The two A330-200s will be assigned to Iberia and the two A330-300s will be operated by Aer Lingus. The 15 A320neos will be assigned within the group.

Re: Boeing, Jet Airways Confirm Order for 75 737 MAX 8 airplanes

Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l) has signed a firm order agreement with Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) for seventy-five B737 MAX 8 aircraft during the ongoing 2015 Dubai Airshow. The order, previously attributed to an unidentified customer, includes conversions of twenty-five B737 NextGen to B737 MAX 8s, as well as options and purchase rights for an additional fifty aircraft.

"Incorporating the latest design and technology features, the highly efficient B737 MAX will allow us to drive our operational efficiency and reaffirms our commitment to providing a best-in-class full service travel experience to our guests," Naresh Goyal, chairman of Jet Airways, said. "This order is an endorsement of our confidence in the long-term prospects of the Indian aviation sector, which reflects the positive forecast for the country's economy and offers tremendous potential for growth and development."

The order is the largest in the Indian carrier's history and is a cornerstone of its fleet renewal strategy. Currently, Jet Airways operates two B737-700s, fifty-nine B737-800s, and six B737-900s.

DUBAI: Piaggio rolls out its MPA in Genoa as it displays a mock-up at show

  • DUBAI
As a newly-built maritime patrol aircraft rolls (MPA) out of a Genoa factory, Piaggio is showing off the ground demonstrator of the P.180 Avanti-based surveillance type at the Mubadala stand.

Piaggio is developing the heftier and heavily modified MPA version of the Avanti in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Autonomous System Investments (ADASI).
To accommodate a higher endurance of 8-9h, the MPA maximum take-off weight grows by more than one-third to 7,480kg (16,500lb).
The weight increase drove Piaggio to extend the size of the wingspan, canard and tailplane. Pratt & Whitney replaces an 850shp turboprop engine with a 950shp version, including a five-bladed Hartzell scimitar propeller.
In the cockpit, the demonstrator on display reveals the new lay-out with the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics suite, replace the Pro Line 21 system. The MPA version an upgraded copy of the touch-screen system developed for the Beechcraft King Air.
The avionics suite is integrated with the Saab-designed mission control system. As targets are identified, the system can alert the flight management system to change the flight plan.
The controls integrate a suite of sensors anchored by the Telephonics 1700-G2 radar, a mechanically-scanned system with inverse synthetic aperture radar capable of tracking up to 1,000 targets.
The operating concept begins with building a maritime picture based on an automatic information system (AIS) receiver delivered by Saab. Any vessels detected by the radar that are not reporting their position on AIS are identified.
The radar cues a vision identification of the target using a FLIR Systems StarSafire 380HD sensor.
Target information is sent via satellite or UHF-band radio to a ground station.
