I nomi delle città non sono stati svelati.

Ten European cities ask Emirates to fly trans-Atlantic

The Milan-New York route has irked some European and American competitors

Miami: Ten European cities have asked Emirates to launch direct services to the United States, airline President Tim Clark said on Monday.
Emirates currently operates one daily fifth freedom service in Europe to the United States, flying from Dubai to Milan to New York with the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380. A fifth freedom service is a flight between two countries operated by a carrier that is not based in either the origin or destination country.
The Milan-New York route has irked some European and American competitors who argue that Emirates should not be allowed to fly the route. Last year, Italian carrier association Assaereo brought a legal challenge against Emirates over the flight in an Italian court that ultimately ruled in favour of the Gulf airline.
Fifth freedom flights into the US from Europe “was never part of our business model,” Clark told reporters at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual meet in Miami. But after the success of Milan he said there was a business case for the airline to do more. Clark declined to name which cities had asked Emirates to launch additional the trans-Atlantic flights but said that they are all in the European Union. He said the latest city had asked Emirates on Saturday to consider opening flights.
Emirates is one of three Gulf carriers currently involved in a major spat with the US’ largest airlines who want to halt the growth of the Dubai carrier because they say it’s unfairly state subsidised. Emirates, whichever denies the accusations, is the world’s largest airline by international seating capacity and has mapped out a global network of more than 140 destinations across six contingents that it feeds in and out of its Gulf hub.
Emirates has said it plans to fly to 20 destinations in the US. Earlier this year, it launched its tenth to Orlando, Florida. Clark said in the US the airline will look to add more destinations and expand on frequencies in the immediate future
“There are any number of cities that are ready,” he said.

Hungary to offer Emirates fifth freedom aviation rights

Central European nation wants UAE airline to rebuild Budapest’s regional hub status

Dubai: Hungary is to offer Emirates fifth freedom rights in a move that is likely to irk some of Europe’s largest carriers lamenting the expansion of the fast-growing Gulf airlines.
Hungary’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Wednesday his country has agreed to offer fifth freedom rights to Emirates after an approach by the government of the United Arab Emirates.
“Negotiations... will be starting soon,” he said at a press conference in Dubai following the first Hungary-UAE joint economic committee meeting.
Hungary has been without a national airline since 2012 when Malev declared bankruptcy, though Budapest is the headquarters of European low-cost carrier Wizz Air, whose network has included Dubai since 2013.
Szijjártó said he hopes Emirates, the Middle East’s largest carrier and that already flies daily to Budapest, will transform the central European country into a regional hub for air traffic.
Emirates declined to comment with an airline spokesperson telling Gulf News it “does not comment on governmental negotiations.”
“We have no immediate plans to operate direct services between Budapest and any destination besides our Dubai hub,” the spokesperson said by email.
Szijjártó said he was due to meet with Emirates later on Wednesday.
Part of Emirates’ network has been built up with fifth freedom rights, which allows the airline fly between foreign countries as long as the flight starts or ends in its own country.
But the strategy has frustrated some of its largest competitors in Europe and the United States, notably Emirates’ daily Milan to New York route, which the Gulf carrier could replicate from Hungary.
“The Eastern European-US market is a significant one, so it’s conceivable that Emirates could tap into the traffic rights. Should they do so it would certainly fuel the fire in the debate,” John Strickland, aviation expert and director of UK-based JLS Consulting, told Gulf News by email.
Szijjártó said opposition from the European Union is unlikely. The EU executive is seeking a mandate from member states to renegotiate bilateral agreements with several states including the UAE.
Qatar Airways, one of the three largest Middle East carriers, at present uses fifth freedom rights to fly Doha–Budapest–Zagreb.
Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, UAE Minister of Economy and chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority, told reporters the fifth freedom agreement will be reciprocal and will be extended to the UAE’s other carriers, including Etihad Airways.

Tempo fa fu segnalata come "route of the week" su anna.aero (rotte non servite, che generano molte query su Skyscanner).

Dopo Budapest, e' stata svelata anche Atene.

Hungary Opens Door for Emirates to Provide Lost Air Link to U.S.

  • U.A.E. seeking rights to fly to two points beyond Budapest
  • Deal could stoke row between Gulf carriers, American rivals

The United Arab Emirates is seeking to establish Budapest as a bridgehead for onward flights in a move that could allow two of the Gulf region’s biggest airlines to carry people between central Europe and the U.S.
The application for so-called fifth-freedom rights concerns services to two points beyond Hungary, Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of the U.A.E.’s General Civil Aviation Authority, said in an interview, adding that those locations have yet to be determined, but could include the U.S.
Such flights can make a huge difference in the growth of airlines, opening up completely new markets that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to access. Since 2013, Emirates, the biggest U.A.E. airline, has been extending a Dubai-Milan service on to New York, tapping travel between prosperous northern Italy and the eastern U.S. with Airbus Group SE A380s seating more than 450 people.

Hungary is unusual in lacking a flag carrier after the collapse of Malev Zrt. in 2012, with Beijing and Qatar the only long-haul routes in addition to Emirates’s Dubai service. Peter Szijjarto, the country’s foreign minister, said in Dubai that the U.A.E. application had been received, while his office added that the government is “open to such cooperation” and aims to start discussions soon.

Connectivity Gap

Al Suwaidi said the Budapest initiative comes as the U.A.E. works to convince countries lacking fifth-freedom provisions to permit such access -- “especially where there is no connectivity, such as Hungary-U.S.” -- though airlines must decide if they want to take up accords put in place. An onward trip to London would be equally possible, he said, though the route is already well-served.
A Hungarian deal could open the door for Emirates, the biggest airline by international traffic, to provide flights to the U.S. as an extension of the daily Dubai-Budapest service. The carrier told Bloomberg it has “no immediate plans” for such operations.
Tim Clark, the company’s president, said last year that Emirates was looking at fifth-freedom opportunities and that Greece had asked it to consider extending flights from Dubai to the U.S., which has no Athens service. Proposals from the U.A.E. for Swiss flights to carry on to Mexico may be resolved this month, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation said Thursday.

Indirect Access

Etihad Airways could also benefit from an expanded Hungary-U.A.E. accord, though it doesn’t currently have flights to Budapest. The Abu Dhabi-based company declined to comment on the government’s application.
Fifth-freedom flights have proved controversial in the past because of the indirect market access the provide. Delta Air Lines Inc. says Emirates’s Milan-New York flight is typical of the exploitation of air treaties by Mideast carriers to tap passenger flows unrelated to their home countries, though it and Alitalia SpA, Italy’s biggest airline, failed in legal challenges to the service.
Emirates’s Budapest-Dubai flight already gives Hungary a one-stop link to major cities in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and parts of Africa, but is of no help in providing routes to the Americas.
Malev’s collapse in February 2012 after 66 years means people must travel to other European cities to get to and from Hungary even on popular long-haul routes. Budapest Ferenc Liszt airport’s website shows they can fly to New York via 12 other hubs, including London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol and Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s Frankfurt and Munich bases.

Discount specialist Wizz Air Ltd., which is based in Budapest, has helped restore much of the European connectivity lost with Malev’s demise, but doesn’t offer intercontinental services.
