Covid-19: chi è andato e chi (forse) torna.

[Mod Charter2017 OFF]

In particolare:

As part of its restructuring, Philippine Airlines (PAL) aims to reduce its fleet by 22 aircraft, mainly by returning aircraft to lessors.
According to a report by Reuters, citing company officials during a media briefing, the airline is aiming for a fleet size of 70 aircraft, down from 92 now, with both widebodies and narrowbodies to be cut.
In addition, the airline has postponed the delivery of 13 Airbus A320neo family jets. Company executives do not expect traffic to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2023-24.
The news came days after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York, a move that had been long anticipated. Lenders and creditors have agreed to over $2 billion in payment reductions and other changes from the restructuring of PAL’s balance sheet.
In a corporate video about the restructuring, PAL president and chief operating officer Gilbert Santa Maria, said the coronavirus pandemic has “devastated” the airline sector, and cut $2 billion from the airline’s revenues.
“We survived the last eleven months by stretching our liquidity through extraordinary cost control efforts, and deferral of capital expenditures,” he says.
He adds that lessors and lenders deferred over $360 million in lease and loan payments, and suppliers extended payment terms. The airline is operating just 21% of its pre-pandemic capacity, serving 70% of its previous destinations.
In addition, the carrier will reduce lease payments, and ensure that it is under no minimum power-by-the-hour arrangements.
The airline’s Chapter 11 filing in the Southern District of New York offers some details about PAL’s creditors. The biggest secured creditor is PK Airfinance, with a $334 million claim secured by aircraft and spare engines. Several banks also have secured claims.
PAL’s biggest unsecured creditor is shareholder Buona Sorte Holdings (BSHI), which is owed $358 million. BSHI is part of the Lucio Tan Group of Companies, which controls PAL.
Other notable creditors are Air Philippines, known as PAL Express, which is owed $171 million in codeshare payments, and the Philippine National Bank, owed $116 million.
Aerospace players and lessors also figure prominently among 40 unsecured creditors, with Rolls-Royce owed $89 million, and Lufthansa Technic Philippines $80.8 million.

Northern Pacific Airways (Anchorage), a wholly-owned subsidiary of FLOAT Alaska LLC, has agreed to the purchase of its first six aircraft—Boeing 757-200s. The airline completed the transaction to meet part of its initial fleet requirements. The first aircraft within this purchase will be delivered immediately.
The airline intends to offer service between points in the U.S. and Asia, via Anchorage, Alaska.
The acquisition of the Boeing 757-200s is the first step in Northern Pacific’s business plan. Prior to entering service, the aircraft will undergo a full C-level maintenance check by Certified Aviation Services LLC (C.A.S.), a leading maintenance, repair and overhaul (M.R.O.) firm in San Bernardino, California. The Alaska-based carrier intends to continue enlarging its fleet as it prepares for passenger flights.
The best in class Boeing 757-200 is powered by twin 36-600 Rolls-Royce RB211 underwing turbo engines for a maximum takeoff weight of 255,000 lbs. The plane can transport over 200 passengers to their destination’s each flight, with a range of 3,915nm/-7,250km per fueling. The single-aisle plane is less costly to fly than its wide-bodied counterparts, yet has a range greater than other aircraft of similar size. Over the duration of their manufacturing program, more than 1,049 Boeing 757-200s were delivered. The aircraft is well suited for point-to-point, long-haul flights, and has enough space to accommodate each passenger’s carry-on.

Sembrano spariti i B717 (sigh!) mentre rimangono i tre Dash 8-400.

Ecuatoriana Airlines (2nd) is now planning to launch operations in early 2022.
Besides operating between Quito and Guayaqui, the new airline will also focus on the resort city of Manta with Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca.
The company is also planning to launch operations with three de Havilland Canada Dash 8-400s.

Qantas vuole sostituire i 20 B717 e i 18 Fokker 100, sta considerando l'A220, l'ERJ-E2 e il B737 MAX7.

SYDNEY/BOSTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Qantas Airways (QAN.AX) is in talks with several planemakers over plans to renew its main narrowbody and regional airliner fleets and is expected to formalise the negotiations with a tender announcement within days, industry sources said.
The Australian carrier is studying the Airbus (AIR.PA) A220 and Brazilian Embraer's (EMBR3.SA) E2 to replace a regional fleet of 20 Boeing 717s and 18 Fokker 100s, they added.
Boeing's 737 MAX 7, the smallest member of its best-selling single-aisle family, is also seen as a contender.
In the busiest part of the market, Airbus and Boeing (BA.N) are competing head to head as Qantas also seeks to replace Boeing 737-800s, the oldest of which are nearly 20 years old.
The combined moves could lead to staggered purchases of as many as 100 jets including options, the sources said.
In Boston, where airline executives were gathering for an industry meeting, Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce declined to comment ahead of a virtual news briefing scheduled for Monday. Planemakers Airbus, Boeing and Embraer also declined to comment.
Talks over the influential airline's business have been under way for months, but Qantas is expected to set out its requirements publicly within days as it and other airlines eye potential bargains for jets in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
"We've said for some time that the renewal of our domestic narrowbody fleet is on our agenda," a Qantas spokesperson said.
"It's a long-term proposition and when we have any material updates to provide, we will.”
Qantas had initially planned to place an order in 2020 but that was delayed by the pandemic. Chief Financial Officer Vanessa Hudson said in February a tender would be launched this year.
Qantas budget arm Jetstar has 109 A320neo family planes on order, but the start of deliveries has been postponed until at least July 2022 due to the impact of the pandemic.
In a separate contest dubbed 'Project Sunrise,' Qantas selected Airbus over Boeing for jets capable of staging the world's longest commercial flights from Sydney to London, but the plans were delayed by the pandemic.

Joyce said in August that order for A350-family jets would not be revisited until international borders reopened.
Australia said on Friday it would begin a staged opening of international borders next month but only vaccinated citizens and permanent residents would be included and they would be required to quarantine at home for seven days on arrival.
The country has not set a date for opening borders to foreigners.

After only two years, the Aalborg-based seasonal charter specialist Great Dane Airlines has been forced to call it quits. The carrier, owned to 90% by a Danish billionaire, never really got a fair chance due to the current crisis. Monday’s news has left over 100 passengers stranded at an airport in the south of Denmark.
The small Danish Embraer operator Great Dane Airlines filed for bankruptcy earlier today, ceasing all flight operations and leaving travelers stranded at Billund Airport in the region of Southern Denmark. The 118 passengers were on their way to Northern Italy with a company called Bravo Tours. However, the travel operator promised to send them on their way soon with another plane.
However, for Great Dane Airlines, calling in another aircraft will not solve the carrier’s woes. The reason for a reportedly otherwise appreciated airline to file for insolvency? It should come as no surprise that the immense pressure of the unprecedented circumstances over the last year and a half caused Great Dane to fold.
First flights summer 2019
Unfortunately, it was not a very long run for Denmark’s Great Dane. The airline only commenced operations in June 2019. The very first flight was a tour-company chartered service from Aalborg to Rhodes, Greece, taking off on June 14th. Meanwhile, the first scheduled service left for Dublin, Ireland, one week later, on June 21st. The airline also operated scheduled routes to Nice and Edinburgh.
Suspicious co-founder
Great Dane was initially co-owned by current CEO Thomas Hugo Møller, who previously held various managerial roles at Aalborg airport, and his partner Huy Duc Nguyen. Meanwhile, it appeared that the latter had heavily embellished his CV as well as LinkedIn profile, claiming to have held positions he never had. As the misrepresentation came to light, Mr Nguyen withdrew from the company.
Shortly thereafter, Danish billionaire Eigild Bødker Christensen invested in the airline, acquiring 90% through his company SEBC II ApS. According to Aviation Savvy, at the time of the investment in March 2019, the businessman was very happy to be a part of the project.
“It is an exciting project that helps to develop Northern Jutland for the benefit of both business and tourism, which I am very pleased to contribute to,” Mr Christensen said. The billionaire also owns a company called Iconic Cars, which sells and leases everything from a Ferrari Monsa to a Rolls-Royce Corniche.
Planes from Flybe and Stobart Air
It is uncertain what will become of the carrier’s three Embraer E195 regional jets, currently based at the operator’s home airport of Aalborg in the North Jutland region. The aircraft are all leased from a company called Propius. Based in Ireland, the company took over the planes from German lessor GOAL in 2017.
At 13 years of age, the aircraft have previously flown for Flybe and Stobart Air (not particularly lucky charms, perhaps). They were also on loan from Great Dane to Vietnamese leisure specialist Bamboo Airways between September 2020 and April this year.
