SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines, the world's second largest airline by market value, on Thursday announced a deal with Airbus to delay delivery of eight A380 aircraft.
It is the latest in a series of order rescheduling by global airlines in the face of a slump in air travel. Thai Airways last month delayed its first delivery of an A380 by two years to 2012.
Several airlines have called for deliveries of their superjumbo planes to be put back, turning the tables after Airbus initially failed to build the plane according to schedule and was forced to pay compensation.
Under the new schedule, deliveries to Singapore Airlines will take place between six months and 12 months later than originally planned.
'It is another measure that will help us better match capacity to demand during the downturn,' said Nicholas Ionides, a spokesman for the airline.
Singapore Airlines would give no details of any costs associated with the rescheduling.
'Because you don't need any more capacity for now, providing that there's no cash cost for them to delay the delivery, it is positive news,' CLSA analyst Robert Bruce told Reuters.
Singapore Airlines currently operates nine A380s and is expected to take delivery of another two aircraft this financial year.
Singapore Airlines posted its first quarterly loss in six years and sees a full-year loss if the tough conditions continue. The airline said its cash position remains strong and does not need to raise capital. -- REUTERS
