MAS: Airbus asked to delay A380 plane delivery to August 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) said the first deliveries of its Airbus A380 super-jumbo planes have been delayed at the manufacturer’s request.
The planes were now slated to start arriving in August 2011 at the earliest, MAS said in a statement yesterday.
The first of the airline’s six A380s were supposed to arrive in January 2011, with additional planes being delivered at one-month intervals.
MAS last week booked a net loss of RM299.6mil for the fiscal third quarter after it cut ticket prices to lure passengers, reducing the carrier’s yields, a measure of average revenue per passenger.
The company also lost money on fuel-hedging contracts.
“Our bigger concern is higher oil prices and its lower yield,” Ng Sem Guan, an analyst at OSK Research Sdn Bhd who rates MAS as “sell,” said by phone.
“It may be another one or two quarters before they break even on yield.”
Boeing Co is due to start delivering 35 737-800 planes to MAS from the fourth quarter of 2010.
Last week, the carrier said it planned to lease two more Boeing B737-800 planes next year to boost domestic flights.
“We have never requested for the A380s to be delayed,” MAS chief executive officer Datuk Tengku Azmil Zahruddin said in the statement. “All delays have been at Airbus’ request.”
