......... TCAB’s remaining three aircraft will be redeployed across the wider Thomas Cook Group while 40 ground staff roles with TCAB would be made redundant. A collective consultation process has been initiated with TCAB’s workers’ council and TCAB is committed to working constructively with them to find a successful resolution. As a result of this expanded partnership, Thomas Cook Belgium would cease using TCAB flights from November 2017.

The proposal builds upon a successful 15-year working relationship between Thomas Cook Belgium and Brussels Airlines, opening up further growth opportunities and enabling both companies to manage aircraft and personnel more efficiently and effectively.

In addition to giving Belgian customers the choice of more departure days and an expanded number of flights, the two companies will work together to assess the opportunity to launch new long-distance flights to sun and beach destinations in North America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia over the next three years.

Jan Dekeyser, Managing Director of Thomas Cook Belgium, said:

Today’s announcement is great news for Belgian holidaymakers. By extending our successful partnership with Brussels Airlines, Thomas Cook Belgium will offer customers from Neckermann, Thomas Cook and Pegase 20% more flights to some of the most popular sun and beach destinations. Across our brands, we will work together with Brussels Airlines to offer a tailor-made travel experience and build the most attractive holiday offering for Belgian consumers. Our extended partnership is consistent with Thomas Cook Group’s strategy as we develop closer relationships with selected third parties to work with us to support profitable growth.
Bernard Gustin, Chief Executive of Brussels Airlines, said:

The combination of Brussels Airlines’ network and expertise with Thomas Cook’s holiday business will further improve the customer offer of Brussels Airlines. On completion, Brussels Airlines will double its sun and beach destinations to 51 with the addition of Cape Verde, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Egypt as brand new destinations on the flight schedule. We feel very optimistic about the opportunities for further expansion as we grow our business to the benefit of both customers and the Belgian economy.
The deal is subject to consultation with the Belgian workers’ council and regulatory approvals.

A bit more information was given at the press conference of this morning:

1. Brussels Airlines takes over 2 aircraft from Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium, but the production for Thomas Cook Belgium needs more aircraft, that will come from the Brussels Airlines fleet at moments when it is idle, e.g. winter and weekends. Thus, Brussels Airlines needs to take over ALL the flight crew of Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium (160 pilots and cabin crew).

2. Brussels Airlines will take care of 90% of the production of Thomas Cook Belgium. Some flights will still be carried out by other airlines under existing contracts, e.g. Air Malta to Malta, Tailwinds to Turkey, etc.

3. All the flights carried out for Thomas Cook will be in the timetable of Brussels Airlines as scheduled flights, and no longer as charter flights.

4. Brussels Airlines will thus have a considerable increase in the number of destinations (no less than 24 new destinations) and frequencies to existing leisure destinations. For example, to Tenerife, Brussels Airlines will operate its two own flights, plus the 5 frequencies taken over from Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium, which means 7 weekly flights or better, a daily flight.

5. Brussels Airlines is discussing with Thomas Cook on how to server some long-haul leisure destinations (Caribbean, North America, Africa, Asia) which Thomas Cook now serves via a change of plane in Frankfurt.

6. The takeover will bring around 1 million new passengers yearly to Brussels Airlines, helping it to achieve the goal of 10 million passengers in 2020.

Brussels Airlines centra risultati positivi sul mercato italiano: «Nel periodo gennaio-maggio il numero di passeggeri dall’Italia sull’intero network della compagnia ha registrato un incremento del 17% del rispetto allo stesso periodo dell’anno precedente – spiega la country manager Italy Roberta Monti -: in particolare grazie alla direttrice Italia-Belgio che visto un +41% di passeggeri». Positive anche le previsioni per i prossimi mesi che indicano un ulteriore crescita del «30% di passeggeri a livello globale e un +58% sulla direttrice Italia-Belgio». A spingere questi risultati «la ripresa e la crescita del traffico business in particolare nel prodotto Economy “Flex & Fast” dedicato al passeggero business. In particolare, per il traffico lungo raggio di business class, la compagnia offre dei plus in termini di servizio come le poltrone completamente reclinabili, l’accesso alle lounge “The Loft”, “The Suite” e “Sunrise” all’aeroporto di Bruxelles, menù di chef stellati a bordo». Buoni riscontri, sul fronte leisure, dal lancio del nuovo pacchetto “Hi Belgium Pass”: con 149 euro il pacchetto (realizzato con il supporto dei due enti del turismo (Visit Flanders e Wbt) include volo a/r dall’Italia a Bruxelles, biglietto treno open, e 2 visite culturali in 2 città del Belgio a piacere).
Per quanto riguarda il resto del network, «ottimi risultati stanno arrivando dalle rotte intercontinentali, specialmente verso l’Africa subsahariana, il Nord Atlantico e la nuova destinazione Mumbai che viene operata con il decimo aeromobile recentemente entrato a far parte della flotta a lungo raggio». Belgium approves Brussels Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium deal

Lufthansa Group carrier Brussels Airlines will start using slots acquired from leisure carrier Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium (TCAB) from October, after receiving approval from the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA).
The deal, which was announced earlier this summer, will see Brussels Airlines will take on TCAB’s 160 pilots and cabin crew, two Airbus A320s and their slot portfolio.
TCAB was created in 2002 to serve holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, Canary Islands and Egypt. Since then, the airline has grown to handle around 1 million passengers per year.
On Sept. 11, Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) approved the asset transfer to Brussels Airlines.
“The concentration was assessed with regard to the market of transport of passengers on scheduled airlines and the market for the wholesale supply of airline seats to tour operators. The [Competition] College [of the Belgian Competition Authority] has decided that the concentration will not cause a significant restriction of competition on any of the concerned markets,” BCA said in a statement.
Brussels Airlines reacted to the news Sept. 12, saying it will request the slot transfer and “definitely commence” a strengthened cooperation with TCAB parent Thomas Cook Belgium by the end of October.
That cooperation was agreed to in March, with three Thomas Cook Belgium tour operators—Neckermann, Thomas Cook and Pegase—selecting Brussels Airlines their lead airline partner effective from the end of October. This means Brussels Airlines will operate 90% of Thomas Cook Belgium’s flight capacity and carry 90% of its passengers. Brussels Airlines already provides 29% of Thomas Cook Belgium’s total flight requirement. This builds on a partnership that dates back 15 years.
“Once Brussels Airlines attains this slot portfolio, the intensified cooperation between Brussels Airlines & Thomas Cook Belgium can go into effect. It is the intention that—by the end of October, at the start of the autumn holidays—Brussels Airlines becomes the leading airline partner of the tour operators Neckermann, Thomas Cook and Pegase. The partnership will result in a wider offer of destinations, flight frequencies and departure days for both companies’ customers,” Brussels Airlines said.
Under a separate deal, Belgian regional carrier VLM Airlines’ Dutch parent company SHS Aviation will take full ownership of TCAB, including the airline’s air operator’s certificate, operating license and 40 TCAB ground staff. ATWOnline

Brussels Airlines Halts A330 Expansion, Ends Wet-Leases For 2027​


Lufthansa subsidiary Brussels Airlines will not expand its long-haul fleet as originally planned and will eliminate wet-lease aircraft operations in 2027, as the carrier faces several headwinds.

With profitability below expectations, repeated strikes in Belgium and the current geopolitical situation, Brussels Airlines has decided to take a careful approach for the coming years.

Brussels Airlines said in an Aug. 4 statement that, after close deliberation with the Lufthansa Group, it has decided to not add two additional Airbus A330-300s to the fleet in 2027, in contrast to earlier announcements.

The long-haul fleet of 11 A330-300s will remain as is for now. However, the introduction of new cabins on the A330 fleet, a multi-million-euro investment, remains on track.


Brussels Airlines is Lufthansa Group’s leading carrier for African routes, operating up to 10 A330-300s daily to the continent and recently launching flights to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The carrier operates to 18 sub-Saharan destinations.

“The fact that we will not take the additional A330 capacity will not affect our current network in Africa. Our route network will remain as is,” a Brussels Airlines spokesperson told Aviation Week on Aug. 7.

Several factors, such as high fuel prices, the Ebola outbreak in East Africa and strikes at third parties created challenges. In the first six months, fuel costs were up €64 million ($73.8 million) compared to the same period last year. These factors resulted in an adjusted EBIT loss of €70 million for the first half of 2026. Revenue increased 9.5%.

The Ebola outbreak reported in some regions of East Africa resulted in reduced travel demand and posed several operational challenges, as crew scheduling and destination restrictions imposed by certain countries created additional operational complexity.

Brussels Airlines does not plan to operate any wet-lease capacity during the summer of 2027. Four wet-leased AirBaltic A220-300s currently deployed in Brussels through the end of October will not be returning for the 2027 summer season.

The spokesperson confirmed that Brussels Airlines intends to operate with its own capacity in 2027. “Regarding our Airbus A320neo deliveries, we now have eight in operation, and the plan is to have 13 A320neos by the end of 2028 in the fleet,” the spokesperson said.

“Brussels Airlines is a robust company that is not afraid to take on a challenge,” CFO Nina Öwerdieck said in the statement. “We have already navigated some storms this year, and now a successful summer will be more crucial than ever to achieve positive full-year results.”

The airline plans to unveil its new cabins for business class, premium economy class and economy class in the course of 2027.

In the second half of 2026, the airline will begin introducing high-speed Wi-Fi on its fleet and will reopen its fully renovated lounge at Brussels Airport.

On July 16, Brussels Airlines announced that its CEO Dorothea von Boxberg will leave the Lufthansa Group on Aug. 31 to join BMW Group as a board member for human resources, effective Sept. 1. Lufthansa Group has appointed Lorenza Maggio from ITA Airways as Brussels Airlines’ new CEO.

According to fleet data from CAPA – Centre for Aviation, Brussels Airlines operates 37 A320neo family aircraft as well as eleven A330-300s.
