The plane, a Bandeirante PT-SEA, left Coari in Amazonas state at 12:38 p.m. (1738 GMT) for the state capital Manaus. It asked permission to return shortly after takeoff because of bad weather condition, said the aircraft owner Aerotaxi Manaus company.

The plane lost contact with the control center after the center consented to its request, the company said.

Around 14:00 p.m. (1900 GMT), the plane crashed into the Manacapuru river when the pilots tried to land the plane on an abandoned runway in the town of Manacapuru.

Divers of local fire department have located the aircraft, and an investigation is underway to identify the cause of the accident.

The company said 24 people were aboard, including 18 adults, four children and two crew members. But the Brazilian Air Force said a pilot has reported that 20 people were aboard.

The aircraft can reportedly carry 16 passengers or 1,500 kg of cargo.
