BAA formally drops runway projects at Heathrow, Stansted
By: Cathy Buyck
British airports operator BAA decided not to proceed with plans to build a third runway at London Heathrow and a second runway at Stansted in response to the new UK government’s formal coalition agreement ruling out new runways at LHR, STN and Gatwick as part of its program for a low-carbon economy BAA owns LHR and STN but sold Gatwick last year. "We recognize the importance of government policy in a matter as significant and controversial as runway capacity," BAA Chief Executive Colin Matthews said in a statement. "The policy intentions of the new government are clear and it is no longer appropriate for us to purchase properties." Regarding LHR, Matthews noted: "We continue to believe that new capacity would strengthen the UK's trading links with the global markets on which our economy and our competitiveness depend." Stansted MD David Johnston said: "We continue to believe that new airport capacity is needed in the South East of England to strengthen the UK's international trading links."
