February 5, 2011 British Airways, part of the International Airlines Group, plans to raise the fuel surcharge on its long-haul flights from next week due to the rising cost of jet fuel.
"BA will increase its fuel surcharge on long-haul services from Tuesday, February 8," BA said in a statement on Friday.
"The move reflects the continuing substantial increase in the price of oil and a 14 percent rise in the spot price of jet fuel since our last fuel surcharge increase in December 2010."
BA said its world traveller and world traveller plus fares would increase by GBP£24 (USD$38) for a return ticket and GBP£12 one-way. First class and club world fares will increase by GBP£34 for a return ticket and GBP£17 one-way, it said, adding that there would be no increase to the price of short-haul tickets.
Rising oil prices could wipe out airline profitability in 2011 and hinder the industry's recovery, airline body IATA said earlier this month.
