An Alitalia Boeing 767-300, registration I-DEIG performing flight AZ-608 from Rome Fiumicino (Italy) to New York JFK,NY (USA), completed a VOR/DME approach to JFK's runway 22L for a seemingly uneventful landing at 2:50pm EDT (18:50Z).
An employee at the Nassau County Courthouse in Mineola,NY heard something fall onto the ground and went to check the item out, which was identified as a hydraulic access door of a Boeing 767 sized 1 foot by 2 feet (32x65cm) weighing about 4 lbs (1.8 kg). The door would normally be located at the underside of the fuselage about between the two main gear legs.
The FAA said, that they identified the Alitalia Boeing 767 having dropped the door at about 4pm. Upon query by The Aviation Herald about the mismatch in time the FAA reconfirmed the Alitalia Boeing having dropped the door stating, that they also received a call from Alitalia reporting the door missing from one of their Boeing 767s.
