ATR studies new larger turboprop family
By Victoria Moores

Regional aircraft manufacturer ATR has begun preliminary studies into a new two-member turboprop family in the 80- to 90-seat capacity range.

Speaking during the World Air Transport Forum in Cannes, ATR marketing VP Mario Formica said: “Today we are thinking about a new family of turboprops with a capacity of 80 to 90 seats. This is something which we are discussing internally and with the engine manufacturers.

“The study was launched 18 months ago, but we have not commented about it externally because we don’t want to talk to the airlines without something credible. We will survey the market to see what the real requirements are.”

He says ATR would tap parent company Alenia’s technological know-how for the new aircraft family, which would comprise two members and be in direct competition with the regional jet sector.

The new family would not be launched until 2015 at the earliest, once technology from aircraft programmes such as the Airbus A350, A380 and Boeing 787 has been proven.

Formica says: “The most important thing is the engines. We are discussing with Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce about a new-generation engine able to power this next generation of turboprop.

“If we want to be competitive in [the 80- to 90-seat] segment, we have to maintain the 30% [cost-saving] gap and to keep the gap we would need new technology.”

ATR has just launched its new -600 series. Formica says around 11 airlines, primarily from the USA, have expressed an interest in the -600.

Canadian turboprop manufacturer Bombardier is also working on a stretch of its Q400, dubbed the Q400X, which would add three additional rows to the existing variant.

Bombardier Regional Aircraft international markets and airline analysis director Philippe Poutissou says the Q400X is under internal study, but is still at a fairly early stage.

He says: “We are thinking of a simple programme, compared with the design of a new aircraft. In terms of development, it is an aircraft that I think should be launched in the next few years, but programme deliveries could start in 2011.”

Bombardier, eyeing rivals, ponders bigger Q400
October 20, 2007

Bombardier Inc., the world's third-largest plane maker, may add a larger version of its Q400 turboprop to compete with rivals' jets on commuter routes, an executive said. The Montreal-based company is studying a model with 90 to 95 seats that "would have commonality with the Q400," Philippe Poutissou, Bombardier's director of airline analysis, said yesterday at an aviation conference in Cannes, France. The plane now carries a maximum of 78 passengers. The Q400 is popular among regional airlines trying to pare jet fuel costs on short-haul flights. A bigger Q400 may spur airlines to pick a turboprop over jets of similar capacity, creating a "new market where there was never turboprop planes in the past," Mr. Poutissou said. Bombardier aims to introduce the model in 2011, he said. BBD.B (TSX) fell 20 cents to $5.52.

"... new two-member turboprop family in the 80- to 90-seat capacity range..."

Oltre a ciò il recente tour dimostrativo negli USA ha portato i suoi buoni frutti, 11 compagnie Statunitensi hanno dimostrato interesse alla recentemente lanciata versione -600.

ATR examines its options for large turboprop
By Max Kingsley-Jones

As market interest in a larger turboprop airliner gathers pace, ATR concedes that a move by rival Bombardier could force it to examine a larger derivative of its 50-70-seat family, despite its preferred option being an all-new aircraft.

Speaking in Paris last week at its annual briefing, where record sales for 2007 were announced, company chief executive Stephane Mayer conceded: "Some customers are asking for a larger aircraft."

Although Mayer says it is too early to say what the size or specification of the aircraft would be, head of sales John Moore says the company is "more focused on developing an all-new aircraft that would provide a step in performance" rather than a stretch of the ATR 72.

But Moore adds that ATR would "have to be able to respond to our competitor - if one of us makes the decision to go into the 90-seat market, the other has to look at it in a whole different light".

Bombardier has long been proposing a 90-seat stretch of its 78-seat Q400, dubbed the Q400X, which, if launched, could enter service early in the next decade. ATR is studying an all-new successor to its existing family from the middle of the next decade.

Moore, who all but rules out a dual response with stretch and all-new model, says ATR would have to "weigh up the market for a stretch versus an all-new model".

He says initial discussions are under way with ATR's existing supplier Pratt & Whitney Canada as well as Rolls-Royce about a new engine, with the target likely to be around a 15% improvement in efficiency. The airframer "has not ruled out" other engine makers from its evaluation, says Moore.

Meanwhile, although ATR booked a record 113 new orders in 2007, none was for the improved -600 models it launched last year. Moore says he hopes the first customers will be secured by mid-2008, adding: "We have a number of new prospects for the -600, and are also talking to customers with existing -500 orders about switching to the new model."

Deliveries of the ATR -600 family are due to begin in late 2010, and production of the -500 is planned to wind down in 2011. ATR delivered a total of 44 aircraft last year, up from 24 in 2006, increasing revenues from $700 million to $1.1 billion. The ATR 2007 year-end order backlog grew more than 57% to 195 aircraft.
