Delta operated SkyWest flight catches fire at Nashville Airport

(CNN)A Delta-operated SkyWest plane caught fire on the tarmac of Nashville International Airport Friday morning. The plane was heading to Cincinnati, Ohio.

The plane had just turned on its engine and had not yet reached the runway when the fire began, according to airport spokeswoman Shannon Sumrall.
"The auxiliary power unit caught fire but when they turned the engine back off the fire extinguished itself and the plane was brought back to the gate and all passengers were de-boarded," said Sumrall.
Further information from Delta, SkyWest, and the Federal Aviation Administration is forthcoming.

Plane catches fire at Nashville airport

Some passengers got more than they bargained for at Nashville International Airport Friday morning.
About 6:45 a.m., passengers at BNA reported that a plane's engine caught fire for several seconds on the tarmac in Concourse B.
Airport spokeswoman Shannon Sumrall said the Skywest aircraft was a Delta flight headed to Cincinnati and that as the plane pushed back from the jet bridge, the engine turned on and an auxiliary unit caught fire. When the pilot turned off the engine, the fire extinguished itself.
The plane was towed back to the gate, Sumrall said. No one was injured.
As of 7:45 a.m., passengers were being rebooked onto other flights, she added.
One of those passengers, Nashville resident Phil Cobucci, 32, said the plane had just pulled back from the gate when the captain came over the loud speaker
"No one heard anything. The plane really just stopped in the middle of the tarmac," said Cobucci. "The captain said, 'We had a misfire,' which didn't really make it sound like the picture I saw (later) when they started popping up on Twitter."
"There wasn't any drama. Everyone is fine. It was more like an inconvenience, really," said Cobucci who said he was rebooked onto another flight that only put him behind by half-an-hour.
University of Utah professor Jason Taylor said he was standing at gate B7 waiting to board his plane to Salt Lake City when he saw the flames coming from the back of the plane.
"Within five to 10 seconds the fire went out on its own," said Taylor, 31. "A lot of the ground workers were running toward the plane. It extinguished pretty quickly and some emergency personnel arrived."
"The ball of fire lasted for several seconds," said Taylor, who had been in Music City visiting. "It freaked a lot of people out. You don't often see fires on planes."
Other passengers and witnesses, including Taylor, caught photos of the flames and posted to social media.
Skywest and Delta representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
