Spanish airline goes bankrupt

Amsterdam News.Net
Monday 12th April, 2010

The Spanish airline Andalus Líneas Aereas has gone bankrupt, leaving the Gibraltar airport without its regular Madrid-Gibraltar connection.

The air link has now been indefinitely suspended following the bankruptcy.

Andalus Líneas Aereas had tried to fill in for both Iberia and GB Airways which pulled out of the Gibraltar run in 2008.

It is believed the improved train connections to Madrid from southern Spanish cities may have had something to do with the airline failing to pick up substantial passenger numbers.

Gibraltar’s air link with Madrid ceases as Spanish airline goes bankrupt

The bumpy journey of the Spanish airline Andalus Líneas Aéreas has come to an abrupt end following on the week end’s confirmation that the Madrid-Gibraltar air link had been indefinitely suspended, according to an article from the Gibraltar Chronicle.

Andalus Líneas Aéreas has mounting debts of over £ 7 million Andalus Líneas Aéreas has mounting debts of over £ 7 million

Spanish Campo newspaper “Europa Sur” reported that the airline, that had sought to fill the gap left after both Iberia and GB Airways pulled out in 2008 and 2009 had confirmed the Madrid flights to and from Gibraltar were indefinitely suspended.

The reports, which come as British Airways is understood to have reconsidered plans to double its daily flights to the Rock, will raise new question marks over the short to medium term prospect of Gibraltar Government getting any substantial direct or indirect return on some £50 million of public money being invested in the new Gibraltar Air Terminal.

Andalus’ schedules have been erratic since day one but the airline defied gloomy reports for months as it struggled to keep alive. Improved train connections to Madrid from both Malaga and Algeciras are amongst a number of factors as well as flights to London often being cheaper than those offered by Andalus into Spain.

This week Spanish officials revealed the company, that owes the Gibraltar Government over £100,000 in landing fees and passenger taxes, has debts of some £7m.

AESA the Spanish air safety authority said this week it is monitoring the airlines activities very closely. But employees complain they are owed money from some months back.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Peter Caruana has consistently defended the £50million investment in the new airport terminal as a vision and investment for future generations of Gibraltarians. He has also pointed to the trilateral Cordoba Agreement (UK, Spain and Gibraltar) as the means of having secured EU liberalisation for the Rock’s airport.

Gibraltar-Madrid air-bridge in doubt after Spanish airline suspends flights
The future of the air bridge between Gibraltar and Madrid was in doubt following Ándalus Líneas Aéreas suspension last week of all flights in the face of unpaid debts running into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

GE Capital Aviation Services [GECAS], an Ireland-based company involved in aircraft leasing and financing, leased two planes to Ándalus last June but claimed it had not been paid since November.

GECAS told the Gibraltar Chronicle that it was owed just over 611,552.71 US dollars by Ándalus. After issuing warnings to the Spanish company, GECAS moved to terminate the leases and insurance in early March due to the failure of Ándalus to settle the payment defaults.

“Despite the Notices of Termination the Lessee has refused to ground or return the aircraft and continues to operate them without legal title,” a spokesman for GECAS told the Chronicle. He added that “because of the refusal of the Lessee to return the Aircraft, GECAS has taken legal action in Spain and in Gibraltar on March 10”.

In a statement issued to the Spanish media, the Spanish Andalus airline insisted the suspension of service was for technical reasons. It made no mention of any legal action by GECAS.

“The temporary suspension is due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the maintenance of the aircraft used on this route,” the Spanish company said. “The plane is currently in Casablanca and several components that need replacing are not currently available”.

“Ándalus apologises for any inconvenience to its clients as a result”.

The company said it would resume flights as from April 19, leaving passengers who had planned to travel to Madrid between now and then arrange alternative transport. Ándalus also stalled the start of a new service between San Sebastián and Madrid. The service was due to have launched last week but has been pushed back to mid April.

UPDATE
