Air Serbia nasce grazie all'accordo con Etihad

Air Serbia has brought forward its launch date by one day and will now inaugurate operations on October 26. The airline is planning a major event in Belgrade that Saturday with the Air Serbia Airbus A319 to operate its maiden flight to Abu Dhabi. State officials as well as the Etihad Airways managing team will take part in the launch. Tickets have been put on sale to the general public for Air Serbia’s inaugural flight. Flight JU800 will leave Belgrade just after 17.00 CEST and will arrive in Abu Dhabi at 00.25. The Serbian carrier will use Etihad Airways’ dedicated terminal three at Abu Dhabi Airport.
In the week leading up to Air Serbia’s launch, the aircraft featuring the Air Serbia livery, its interior as well as crew uniforms will be revealed to the public. The newly refurbished sales offices, featuring the Air Serbia branding, will also be opened in Belgrade and throughout Serbia during that week. The airline’s hub, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, is also preparing for Air Serbia’s launch. Airport CEO Velimir Radosavljević says, “The airport is simultaneously carrying out several major investments in order to increase capacity and improve its services but also to fulfil the higher standards requested by Air Serbia”. He adds, Air Serbia will be the busiest carrier operating up to three major departure waves per day from the airport.
Meanwhile, the Serbian carrier has revealed the full list of destinations that will be served by its new Airbus A320s next summer. In addition to the already announced Skopje and Podgorica, the A320s will be utilised on flights to Larnaca, Amsterdam, Moscow and Paris. As EX-YU Aviation News learns, the airline will keep several Boeing 737-300 aircraft in its fleet over the summer, which are to be used exclusively for charter flights in a high density all economy class layout. Charter flights are one of Jat Airways’ most profitable sectors and Air Serbia plans on maintaining them. Furthermore, EX-YU Aviation News learns the airline will add another new destination next summer, its eighth, in addition to the previously announced Beirut, Budapest, Cairo, Kiev, Sofia, Varna and Warsaw. Air Serbia will introduce two Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet at the start of the 2014 summer season. The airline will acquire the two jets through a financial lease and they will join the carrier’s fleet of eight Airbus A319s and four ATR72 turboprops. The new aircraft will enter service on March 30, 2014 and will initially be deployed to Paris, Skopje and Podgorica. The arrival of the A320s will also mark the retirement of the entire Boeing 737-300 fleet which includes Europe’s first B737.
Meanwhile, Air Serbia’s A319 fleet is taking shape with the first aircraft to be delivered on October 21. The most recent acquisition includes the lease of a former Kingfisher jet which has been stored in Istanbul since the airline’s demise. The A319s will be entered into the Serbian register as YU-APA and onwards (YU-APB, APC etc.). The Kingfisher aircraft, the third to be leased, is now being painted into the airline’s corporate livery in Dublin. Air Serbia’s first set of newly employed cabin crew members and in flight chefs will begin their formal training for the aircraft next week in Belgrade, while the forty Jat Airways pilots which have been undergoing training in Dusseldorf and Berlin are set to return to Serbia.

Starting October 28, Air Serbia will introduce its new frequent flyer program in cooperation with Etihad Guest Miles. Passengers will be able to earn Etihad Guest Miles when travelling with both Air Serbia and Etihad. “By integrating the frequent flyer program, Air Serbia passengers will be able to earn Etihad Guest miles points through the booking systems of both the national carrier of Serbia as well as the United Arab Emirates, meaning they will be able to earn and use their points worldwide”, Dane Kondić, Air Serbia’s CEO commented yesterday. Passengers using Jat’s current Extra Flight Club frequent flyer program will be able to redeem their points for travel until October 2014 and will be invited to join the new Guest Miles program. In addition, Etihad Holidays will soon take control over Jat Airways’ own leisure division “Air Lift”. Once a major tour operator in Serbia, Air Lift has gone into oblivion since its separation from Jat’s mainline business several years ago under the orders of the government. Ex-YU Aviation News

Hundreds of Jat Airways employees have applied to voluntarily leave the airline in return for a redundancy package. According to the Jat Airways employee union, some 350 people, or 27% of its workforce, are leaving the Serbian national airline, the biggest number of employees ever to apply for voluntary leave from the company. Employees have been offered 300 euros for every year they have spent working for Jat. The deal is beneficial for those who have little time left until retirement.

Redundancy packages have been offered to Jat Airways employees several times over the past thirteen years in an attempt to cut down on its workforce. Earlier this year redundancy packages were also offered, with only a handful of employees applying. However, since Etihad Airways purchased a minority stake in Jat, more have been willing to leave the airline. According to the takeover agreement between Etihad and the Serbian government, the government will cover the cost of the redundancy payout.

In a strongly worded statement, the Jat Airways employee union said, “We are witnessing another group of our colleagues leaving the company. Like many others before them no one has remembered to farewell them, thank them for their contribution, wished them good luck, given them a present on behalf of the company, even just a symbolic key ring from the departing Jat or the oncoming Air Serbia. Corporate culture? No, it is corporate arrogance, shamelessness”. The union goes on to say, “We hope and wish that this new airline which we are being promised is run by new people who know what a company is and who are its employees, what is a profit and what is a loss and why in a successful company there are happy employees. Because one without the other just doesn’t work”. According to Jat’s 2012 financial report, the airline has 1.298 employees. Ex-YU Aviation News

With just under twenty days left until the official launch of Air Serbia, the new look Serbian national carrier is boasting what it says will be an onboard product previously unseen in the region. The recently appointed new CEO of Jat Airways and the future head of Air Serbia, Dane Kondić, says, “This is a historic time for Jat Airways as it stands on the cusp of a fresh, exciting and innovative transformation into Air Serbia. Working closely with our new partners we will create a successful national airline for Serbia and build a solid foundation for us to grow and thrive as a profitable and sustainable world class airline”.
Mr. Kondić explains Air Serbia’s short term strategic plans include the introduction of an upgraded fleet, new routes, better connectivity and improved service. In the long term, Mr. Kondić believes the Serbian carrier will become a leading airline in the region. “The creation of Air Serbia is about making real positive changes that will enable us to serve you better than ever before”, the CEO says. He adds, “Our first Airbus A319 aircraft will allow us to offer levels of comfort and service not previously experienced by passengers flying on our network”.
Yesterday, the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, spoke of the airline’s new onboard product which will be revealed to the public during the week starting October 21. “The cabins and service at Air Serbia will be better than those offered by Lufthansa. They are criticising our deal with Etihad but Air Serbia will become a leading company in the region which will take a lot of business away from other airlines, including German ones”. Mr. Vučić’s comments came after a critical piece aired recently by Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle, questioning whether Etihad will have much to gain from purchasing Jat.
Jat CEO Dane Kondić is also upbeat on what passengers can expect from the airline come late October, “We cannot wait to share with you this new flying experience. It is very exciting”. He adds, “We are building a fuel efficient, environmentally friendly fleet that will better meet the demands of our network and business”.

[h=1]Delta Air Lines asks DoT to reject Etihad/Air Serbia codeshare application[/h]

Delta Air Lines issued (04-Oct-2013) a response to the US Department of Transportation regarding Jat Airways' [Air Serbia] application for the authority to operate services from Serbia to the US on a codeshare-only basis, and Etihad Airways' application for the authority to place Jat Airways' code on its services from Abu Dhabi to the US. Delta stated: "JAT and Etihad’s proposed codeshare services are highly circuitous, commercially implausible, and are likely to cause consumer confusion. Moreover, JAT and Etihad have not been candid with the Department in their characterisation of the facts concerning Etihad’s ownership interest in and effective control of JAT. JAT and Etihad bear the burden of addressing these issues in a forthright manner, particularly given that the proposed services would be the product of market-distorting, anti-competitive state subsidies from which both Etihad and JAT benefit. The proposed codeshares are not in the public interest and, accordingly, the Department should deny both JAT’s exemption request and Etihad’s application for a statement of authorization." Delta also alleged that "JAT and Etihad have mischaracterized Etihad’s ownership and effective control of JAT, which are significantly more extensive than suggested", adding the "lack of a US-Serbia aviation bilateral agreement requires JAT to demonstrate clear public benefit", and that the DoT "should discourage the abuse of TSA pre-clearance in Abu Dhabi.

The Serbian carrier will be offering a significantly more advanced onboard product than its predecessor. The airline says, “Our emphasis on quality and freshness is reflected in our onboard dining experience, and the local produce we use in our meals. We are also proud to offer a uniquely Serbian cuisine and beverages in both business and economy class cabins. Our hospitality and service standards are a testament to the best that Serbia has to offer”.

Fleet
By April 2014 Air Serbia will operate a fleet of eight Airbus A319s, two A320s and four ATR72s. The airline’s second A319 will arrive in Belgrade by the end of next week and another four will join the fleet by the end of the year. In early 2014 a further two will come into service while the A320s will join the fleet at the end of March. All four ATR72s will be painted in the airline’s livery and receive the new interior. Several Boeing aircraft are expected to stay in the fleet in order to operate charter flights over the 2014 summer season. They too will receive new cabins with an all economy class layout from March 2014.
