Air India to start Delhi–Rome/Milan flights from June 2014
In its classic manner, Air India is putting out a new flight between Delhi and Rome/Milan from June 6, 2014 but there is no marketing or the mention of this flight on their website, yet. You can’t even look up the route on Air India’s own website.
As per AirlineRoute.net, Air India is returning to Italy as of June 2014. The flight will do a triangular routing, just like their Australia segments between Melbourne/Sydney, and the schedule will be as following:
It is a very interesting development from two perspectives.
Now here is to hoping this route works out for Air India, unlike how it did not work out for Jet Airways. While I’d expect a double miles offer on this route, at this moment, nothing is certain.

It is a very interesting development from two perspectives.
- Jet Airways had pulled out from Delhi Milan last year, stating losses on the route. They operated this route with an Airbus A330-200 plane.
- The Boeing 787 helps operate long and thin routes, so that may be the difference for Air India, but they are selling tickets at INR 39000 on this route at the moment, and it totally beats me how will they make money at this price.
Now here is to hoping this route works out for Air India, unlike how it did not work out for Jet Airways. While I’d expect a double miles offer on this route, at this moment, nothing is certain.

NEW DELHI: Almost 250 passengers on board a Boeing Dreamliner flying from Frankfurt to Delhi had a close shave when the aircraft's windshield cracked minutes after taking off. The Dreamliner (VT-ANK) had to then had to immediately turn back for Frankfurt and landed safely.
The latest windshield crack happened last Friday (May 9) when the plane had taken off with 241 passengers and 10 crew for Delhi. This is incidentally the second time in six months that the same Dreamliner (VT-ANK) suffered a windshield crack. Last November also, this plane cracked its windshield on a Delhi-Melbourne flight while landing in Australia.
"AI has so far had five instances of Dreamliner windshield cracks. This issue has been taken up with Boeing but is far from being satisfactorily resolved. Windshield cracks happening with such regularity in a brand new plane are rare," said a senior AI official.
Windshield cracks happen due to uneven heating or something hitting the same. "Windshield cracks happen in an aircraft usually after four to five years or when some foreign object hits the same. But brand new Dreamliners cracking their windshields without any apparent foreign object hitting them is cause for worry. What has been happening is there is water ingress in these windshields and then the electric system inside it gets short-circuited. AI and DGCA must take this up with Boeing," said a source.
Meanwhile, another Boeing 787 Dreamliner was grounded in Paris CDG Airport on Tuesday for yet another technical snag. "The windshield of the plane which cracked in Frankfurt has been replaced and Dreamliner grounded in Paris has been rectified and both are flying," said an AI official.
Sources in AI say that the airline is waiting for the next aviation minister to take over and then raise the issue with Boeing. They say that the outgoing top brass of aviation ministry never took up the issue seriously with Boeing. Expectation ran high in the airline when outgoing minister Ajit Singh personally went to Boeing headquarters in Seattle (US) to take delivery of one of the planes.
"We expected the issues AI is facing with Dreamliners to have been taken up when Ajit Singh was there. But none of our issues have been resolved and we continue to lose money as a result of the unending B-787 snags. Our passengers also suffer and we get a bad name for no fault of ours," said an official.

National carrier Air India today started operations of direct flights between Delhi and Rome and Milan in Italy which will be operated on a triangular basis with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The flights from Delhi to Rome (Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci Airport) and Milan (Malpensa Airport) will be operated on four days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. AI-123 will depart from Delhi at 1420 hrs and arrive in Rome at 1905 hrs. The flight will leave Rome at 2040 hrs (as AI 122) and reach Milan at 2200 hrs.
The return flight AI 122 will depart from Milan at 2330 hrs and arrive in Delhi at 1015 hrs the following day.
Delhi-Milan-Rome-Delhi - will operate thrice a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. AI 123 from Delhi to Milan will depart at 1420 hrs and arrive in Milan at 1930 hrs. It will then proceed to Rome (as AI 122) at 2100 hrs and arrive at 2210 hrs.
The return flight AI 122 from Rome will depart at 2335 hrs and arrive in Delhi on the following day at 1015 hrs.
"By offering direct services to Italy, Air India will be fulfilling a long-standing demand of not only Indians residing in Italy but also the travel and tourism industry. So far, passengers have been changing to other airlines or transiting at international hubs in West Asia. This move will make Air India the only Indian carrier with direct flights to and from Italy," a press release from the airline said.
"Air India’s B-787 Dreamliner has a two-class configuration, with 18 business class seats and 238 economy class. It is one of the most advanced aircraft in the sky. Its wing, tail, nose and flight deck windows have all been engineered for the maximum aerodynamic efficiency, reducing fuel burn. The Dreamliner’s spacious architecture, stowage space, lower cabin altitude, dimmable-windows ensure a smooth and unrivalled passenger experience," the release added.

Sarei curioso di conoscere il LF del primo periodo dei voli, visto che la rotta è stata annunciata pochissimo tempo prima della partenza ed è stata fatta finora praticamente nessuna pubblicità. Secondo me a parte i forum di appassionati sono pochissimi i potenziali pax a conoscenza di questi voli.
Vedo che con meno di € 1000 vai a Sydney e con meno di € 500 vai a Delhi, non male credo che le compagnie del Golfo non facciano a meno:compiaciuto:
Il bilaterale consente agli Indiani di volare a Roma, di volare a Milano, ma non è esplicitamente consentita la coterminalizzazione, che è autorizzata da una deroga a cui si è opposto per mesi il Ministero degli Esteri.
A mio parere, c'entra eccome...
In ambito internazionale credo che la politica ed i governi entrino nel merito (e spesso dovrebbero avere lo scopo di promuovere, o limitare) di relazioni che riguardano aziende "strategiche" per le nazioni coinvolte.
Vedi Finmeccanica (Probabilmente) coinvolta nel caso dei "Marò".
Air India, è una compagnia aerea di linea, che gestisce al momento il traffico aereo diretto tra Italia ed India... (non è un'aziendina di famiglia che vuole a vendere vestiti indiani a Milano). Le concessioni, ripeto a mio parere, non dovevano essere concesse.
(Qualcosa il nostro paese dovrebbe anche fare...non possiamo continuare a prendere docce fredde e ringraziare come al solito)
