Air Europa to start own B787 ops in 2Q2016 as HNA deal nears
Air Europa (UX, Palma de Mallorca Son Sant Joan) will likely take delivery of its first in-house B787-8 in late March/early April next year ahead of the its introduction into revenue service on April 13.
ch-aviation analysis of schedule data shows the Spanish carrier plans to use its first own B787 for a 5x weekly Madrid Barajas-Miami Int'l flight which will graduate to a daily service from June 16. Other potential destinations include México City, Panamá City Tocumen Int'l, San José Juan Santamaría in Costa Rica, Bogotá in Colombia, Quito Int'l in Ecuador, Washington Dulles in the United States, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo in South Africa, and Shanghai Pudong in China.
Air Europa currently operates a single B787-8 - SP-LRF (msn 35942) - which it leases from LOT Polish Airlines (LO, Warsaw Chopin) for flights to Miami.
In total, the airline has eight B787-8s and fourteen B787-9s on order from Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare). Of the orders, five B787-8s will be delivered in 2016 while the first B787-9s will only begin to arrive in 2020. They are to be used to replace Air Europa's outgoing fleet of twelve A330-200s and two A330-300s.
In related news, Spanish media report China's HNA Group could soon reach an agreement with Globalia Corporacion over the sale of a minority stake in Air Europa.
Quoting informed sources, El Confidencial newspaper says the Chinese have targeted the 48% stake held by local banks Unicaja and Banco Popular in the airline. Globalia's founder and CEO Juan Jose Hidalgo will retain a majority, controlling 53.6% stake in the airline in compliance with EC ownership laws. However, he would not be able to appoint any of his children to managerial or directorial roles.
Talks between the two sides first emerged this year though they were reported to have stalled following disputes over the airline's valuation with HNA reportedly putting it at EUR800 million (USD880 million) against Globalia's assessment of EUR1.2 billion (USD1.32 billion).
