Air Europa to launch local Brazilian carrier

Spain's Air Europa is set to become the first foreign airline to launch a local carrier in Brazil under newly liberalised foreign ownership rules, says Brazil’s infrastructure minister Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas.
Gomes de Freitas said on Twitter that Grupo Globalia, Air Europa’s parent company, is planning to launch a new Brazilian airline as a result of the presidential decree from December, which eliminated foreign ownership limits for local aviation companies.
Brazil's parliament and senate are slated to sign the presidential decree into law this week.
“[Air Europa] will be the first company to operate in the Brazilian market thanks to the presidential decree that opened local companies to foreign capital. Once it receives authorisation [to operate], it will hire Brazilian pilots, cabin crew, generating employment, making the aviation sector more competitive and attracting new foreign investment to the country," says the minister.
A Globalia spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in Madrid declines to confirm or deny the plans.
However, Brazil’s civil aviation authority ANAC posted on its website the formal request filed by Globalia to begin the process of certification to operate scheduled air transportation services..
Since Globalia does not use its corporate name as the commercial brand for any of its airlines, hotel groups or travel agency chains, it remains to be seen what it will name the proposed Brazilian carrier.
Globalia is investing heavily in developing hotels in Brazil’s northeast, and Air Europa has announced service between Madrid and Fortaleza. Launching a domestic, leisure-focused airline to feed local traffic to its tourist destinations could make sense for the Spanish travel group. FG
