Accident: Air India A320 at Jaipur on Jan 5th 2014, runway excursion on emergency landing

An Air India Airbus A320-200, registration VT-ESH performing flight AI-890 from Guwahati to Delhi (India) with 173 people on board, could not land in Delhi (scheduled arrival at 20:40L/15:10Z) due to weather and diverted to Jaipur (India) about 125nm southsouthwest of Delhi. By the time the aircraft arrived at Jaipur visibility at Jaipur had reduced below minima as well, the crew however needed to decide to land in Jaipur being unable to reach another aerodrome with the fuel remaining. While landing on Jaipur's runway 27 at about 21:30L (16:00Z) the aircraft burst a number of tyres, veered left off the runway and the left hand wing collided with an obstacle, reportedly a tree, before the aircraft came to a stop. No injuries occurred, the aircraft received substantial damage to its left hand wing.

The airport reported the aircraft blew a nose gear tyre and received damage to the left hand wing. The aerodrome needed to be closed due to the runway being blocked by the aircraft.

The airport reopened the following morning after the aircraft was towed back onto the runway and further to the apron.

Photographic evidence shows the left hand main tyres deflated with grass embedded at the gear.

Satellite images (see below) show a a large tree about 52 meters/170 feet south of the southern runway edge at about 1340 meters down the 2780 meters long runway 27.

On Jan 7th 2014 India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation reported that the captain was on duty for more than 12 hours at the time of landing, the aircraft had been airborne for more than 5 hours at that time and had run out of fuel just after landing. The aircraft landed off the center line of the runway in near zero visibility, almost landing on a nearby drain, and went off the runway onto unpaved surface, it's left wing contacted an unidentified object while the pilots attempted to steer the aircraft back onto the runway. The aircraft received substantial damage beyond repair to landing gear, tyres and the left hand wing.

Passengers reported that while approaching Delhi the crew announced they couldn't land in Delhi due to fog and were diverting to Jaipur. The aircraft touched down very hard and very fast in Jaipur, "jerked" then swayed left and right, a number of oxygen masks came down as result of the forces and jolts during roll out. After the aircraft finally came to a halt, the captain announced they had landed in Jaipur, they couldn't make it to Lucknow or Allahabad due to fuel, hence they were forced to perform an emergency landing into Jaipur despite zero visibility. Emergency services did not find their way through the fog to the aircraft, the passengers were kept on board until finally ground personnel arrived on scene. A number of fire engines, police cars and ambulances were around the aircraft when passengers finally disembarked and later learned a tyre had blown and the left hand wing had been damaged. The passengers were taken to hotels, the following morning three busses turned up to bus the passengers to Delhi, that journey on the road lasted more than 11 hours until arrival in Delhi.

Jaipur offers runway 09/27 of 2780 meters length. Runway 09 only features VOR approaches, runway 27 offers an ILS/DME approach with a DH of 230 feet.

Interessante. Dovrò fare la stessa tratta con la stessa compagnia tra un mese e mezzo!
Meno male comunque che è andato tutto bene.
 
Onestamente l'articolo che riporta la notizia non mi sembra particolarmente affidabile:

On inspection, ground officials found that the aircraft had run out of fuel, which turned out to be blessing in disguise. Directorate General of Civil Aviation officials said since the aircraft had been airborne for over 5 hours, it had run out of fuel by the time of landing, preventing it from exploding on impact.

5 ore in volo per un GAU-DEL (787 miglia nautiche): qualcosa non torna. Non saranno mica rimasti un po' troppo a lungo in holding nella speranza di atterrare a DEL? Mi pare comunque impossibile.

A parte la stanchezza, che sicuramente avrà avuto un ruolo, potrebbero esserci stati errori di pianificazione e gestione del volo (e degli alternati) per rimanere senza carburante.
 
Con mia grande sorpresa, avevo visto quello che assomigliava ad un viale alberato al DMK di Bangkok.
Lo stesso aeroporto ha anche il campo da golf tra le due piste principali ma non mi ricorso se fosse alberato oppure no.
 
Nelle foto si vede il carrello danneggiato con 4 ruote... Il 320 ne ha 2... Sbaglio?
