Incident: Hawaiian B763 over Pacific on Jan 6th 2010, unruly passenger

A Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N582HA performing flight HA-39 from Portland,OR to Kahului,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was enroute overhead the Pacific about 90 minutes into the flight, when a male passenger (56) refused to stow his carry on bag and made threatening remarks prompting the crew to return to Portland. When the Boeing reached the US coast on the way back, two US F-15 fighter jets intercepted the Boeing and accompanied her to Portland, where the Boeing landed safely about 2:50 hours after departure. The passenger was taken into custody by local police, another woman was also removed from the flight.
The airplane departed again and reached Kahului with a total delay of 5:20 hours.
Passengers reported, that the unruly passenger had also left a note to the flight attendants. The captain announced, they had a mechanical problem and therefore were returning to Portland.
The TSA reported, that the man had refused to stow his carry-on bag and made threatening remarks.
The FBI reported, they interviewed the man, his companion and the crew. The US States Attorney was involved for a review, the man was subsequently released without charges.
