Ryanair rejigs Italian operations

04 Aug 2008

Ryanair is to transfer seven international routes from Forli to nearby Bologna airport from the start of the winter timetable on 27 October 2008.

They are: Barcelona (Girona); Birmingham; Brussels (Charleroi); Dublin; Frankfurt (Hahn); Stansted and Valencia.

Ryanair plans to concentrate its Forli operations on domestic routes. From March 2009 Forli will become the airline’s 29th European base, with one aircraft stationed there, operating to at least three and up to six new destinations, delivering 400,000 passengers annually and creating 400 local jobs.

Then in June 2010 Bologna will become Ryanair’s 30th base. An initial two aircraft will be stationed there, delivering 800,000 annual passengers and creating 800 jobs. This will rise to five aircraft, 25 routes, 2m annual passengers and 2,000 jobs by 2012.

Chief executive, Michael O’Leary, commented: ‘The growth of Ryanair’s low fares in Italy marks a major breakthrough for passengers who will now benefit from increased choice and the lowest airfares from Bologna to seven European destinations.

‘This will release the region from the high airfares, fuel surcharges and frequent strikes of Alitalia and underlines our commitment to the Italian travelling public.’

According to O’Leary, the 2m Bologna passengers will save ‘over €208m, as Ryanair’s average fares are €102 cheaper than Alitalia’s’.

Giuseppina Gualtieri, chairman of Bologna G Marconi Airport, added: ‘Thanks to this agreement, the airport will fill the existing gap of low cost flights offering and pave the way for future development, making a vital contribution to the region's economy and giving a real boost to the influx of tourists.

‘Bologna's role as a European gateway has thus been consolidated.’
