Willie Walsh urges relaxation of visa rules for Chinese visitors

easid-201285-media-id-7469.jpg

The government is being urged by the head of International Airlines Group to follow through on a pledge to relax visa rules for Chinese businesses and tourists.
Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways owner IAG, has written to home secretary urging her to introduce a new ten-year visa for Chinese visitors, fulfilling a promise made more than two years ago.
It read: “We need a step change on China. We make it hard for Chinese tourists to visit.
“The USA charges £119 for a ten year visa while Britain charges £767.
“Making it easier for Chinese businesses and tourists to come to the UK is critical to boosting our economy and enhancing global trading links, especially post Brexit.
“We continue to lose out on the new jobs that Chinese investment and affluent tourists bring.”
His comments come ahead of prime minister Theresa May’s visit to China.
IAG is also calling for the government to implement two proposals from the UK China Visitor Alliance – that new biometric visas issued by Schengen countries be recognised by the UK and granting visas to the parents of Chinese students studying in the UK, according to the Press Association.
The UK issued 480,000 visas to Chinese tourists in 2016 while France, Germany, Italy and Spain together issued 1.5 million.
The Schengen visa costs €99 and offers free access to 26 countries, putting the UK at a “competitive disadvantage”, IAG said.
China’s burgeoning middle class are increasingly travelling overseas, with around 122 million trips in 2016, up 4.3% on the previous year.
The UK and China recently signed a bilateral agreement that raises the permitted number of weekly flights between both countries from 40 to 150. TW

British Airways announces transatlantic hand baggage only fare

British Airways has announced plans for a new transatlantic Basic fare, which will launch this spring on selected routes.
Exact routes and pricing are not yet available, but the carrier has confirmed that the fare will offer passengers hand baggage only, and will not include seat selection.
The new fare will launch in April “on selected transatlantic routes with our joint business partners, American, Iberia and Finnair”. It will be referred to as “Basic” on AA, BA and Iberia, and “Light” on Finnair services.
The unbundled fare will be offered on selected routes between Europe and North America, and will continue to include inflight meals, IFE, headphones and blankets.
In a release BA said that the new fare would “allow customers the choice to personalise their journey and only pay for the elements they require”, with passengers able to add options individually.
More information on routes and pricing will be made available “when the fares go live”.
The carriers are the latest to introduce HBO transatlantic fare options, and Virgin Atlantic will now surely follow suit – its partner Delta has already announced HBO fares on selected routes linking Europe and the US.
Other airlines who have adopted HBO fares on transatlantic routes include Air France KLM, Alitalia and Aer Lingus.

British Airways releases pricing for Hand Baggage Only (HBO) fares

British Airways has released details about its new Hand Baggage Only transatlantic fares.
The new fares called ‘Basic’ fares are Hand Baggage Only and were announced last month.

The update today is over the pricing, which the airline says is up to £60 less than the standard fare and also the fact that they are available not only on transatlantic routes but other destinations as well.
The airline says that these new fares will start from £143 each way, based on a return fare, and are available today on flights from London to Austin, Boston, Delhi, Denver, Dubai, Hong Kong, Oakland, Philadelphia, Punta Cana and Singapore.
British Airways is launching the Basic fares in conjunction with its transatlantic joint business partner airlines, American Airlines, Finnair and Iberia.

  • Oakland from £185,
  • Denver from £191,
  • Delhi from £210,

All prices are each way, based on a return fare.

The new ‘Basic’ fare includes in-flight meals, two-piece hand baggage allowance and allow the use of Avios as part payment.
Adam Daniels, British Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “We know that when our customers travel with us their needs vary from trip to trip – some will be flying on business, some for leisure, some will be on short hops, others will be longer stays. We need to ensure that the fares we provide reflect those differing needs so customers can select the best option for them on that occasion.
“Someone travelling for a short meeting or leisure break, who isn’t planning to check in a bag and is happy for us to allocate them a seat, will appreciate the option to secure a lower fare. They’ll still receive our generous hand baggage allowance, a seat allocated to them in advance, complimentary food and drink, in-flight entertainment, blankets and headphones, all at no extra cost. And those looking to make even more savings can use Avios towards the flight too.”
Customers will have their seat allocated for them by British Airways at check-in or can pay for seat selection.
Silver and Gold Executive Club members can continue to select their seat at the time of booking and Bronze members can select their seat seven days in advance as they do now. The airline will also continue to seat families together in advance of travel.
Travellers who wish to check in a bag or allocate their own seats can still purchase the current standard fare or choose to add checked bags and seating before travel for extra cost.
The hand baggage allowance is one handbag/laptop bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 40 x 30 x 15cm / 16 x 12 x 6in) plus one additional cabin bag (max. 23kg / 51lb and up to 56 x 45 x 25cm / 22 x 18 x 10in)
Changes to the booking can be made for a fee, plus any difference in fare
Basic fares can be combined with other fare types e.g. basic fare outbound and a standard fare return
British Airways says it will try to seat families together several days ahead of travel, however they may be split across aisles or rows. Children under 12 will always be seated with an adult on the same booking.
Executive Club Members can still collect Avios and Tier Points on their bookings.

Penso siano rumours.

BA apre Durban

Newsletter interna:

Surf's up: Direct to Durban

Travellers hoping to escape the Northern Hemisphere’s shorter days and long, cold nights this winter can take off to Durban with our new direct service.

Durban is a year-round destination, with sultry summers and mild, dry winters. It has long been a favourite holiday playground for South Africans but will soon be easier than ever for international visitors to enjoy too.

From October 29, we'll be using our Boeing 787-8 aircraft on the only non-stop link between Europe and Durban. Our three flights a week timetable will have a morning arrival into Durban and an evening arrival into Heathrow.

[...]

"Durban is also home to the busiest port in South Africa and is a large manufacturing hub, so the new route will secure another important link between the UK and the region that will be a welcome addition for business travellers."
