Pacific Northwest gets London boost with new Delta, Virgin Atlantic flights between Portland and Seattle

The entirely of the US Pacific Northwest will be easier to reach from London as Delta Air Lines announced a new seasonal nonstop service between Portland, Oregon and London-Heathrow. The current daily Delta service from Seattle to London-Heathrow will transition to a Virgin Atlantic flight, featuring the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, adding 50 seats. Delta and Virgin have had a joint venture since 2014 and this marks the first Pacific Northwest-based flight for the Richard Branson-founded airline.
Though seemingly 'ho-hum' to the rest of the world, the new Delta Portland service is a big deal and most welcome for business and those looking to visit The Rose City. Travel to and from Portland and London requires at least one stop and the nonstop flight, which will operate four days a week starting May 26, 2017, provides greater access to the region.
“We are excited to have this service,” said Courtney Ries, marketing director of Travel Portland. “The UK is our number one European visitation market in Portland and this enhances our great international portfolio of nonstop flights into PDX (Portland’s airport designation). We look forward to welcoming more visitors from the UK as this service takes flight.”
Portland currently has nonstop service to and from Europe via Reykjavik, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. It also has a flight to Tokyo, though that Delta service is under scrutiny and could be jettisoned, according to reports.
The addition of the high-profile flight could be yet another existential threat to Alaska Airlines as the drive for market share out west continues. Portland is a main hub for Alaska and both have been engaged in a battle for Alaska’s hometown of Seattle with Delta and Alaska progressively (and aggressively) adding service in each others’ main markets. Delta is the largest global carrier in both Seattle and Portland and has more than tripled its flights at the former’s hub.
Alaska recently acquired Virgin America and currently runs service direct between Portland and San Francisco on both carriers. Delta, at present, does not have nonstop service between the two cities but does have multiple daily flights between Portland and both Seattle and Los Angeles.
The new flight’s timing appears to be good for the state of Oregon as well. Recently, Travel Oregon indicated that tourism spending in the state rose to more than $10.6bn with 12 per cent of that tally coming from global markets.

Delta and Virgin strengthen US-UK network

Delta and Virgin have strengthened their US-UK network with a new London-Portland, Oregon service as well as boosting frequency on other routes.

Delta will fly four-times weekly to the west coast city from Heathrow, starting May 26 2017.

The airline will also add a second Detroit to Heathrow service from March 26 2017, replacing Virgin's daily flight. As well as adding a third Atlanta-Heathrow frequency, taking over the second daily service currently operated by Virgin Atlantic, beginning May 25, 2017. Virgin Atlantic will continue to operate one daily Atlanta to London Heathrow service.

From March 26 2017, Virgin will start flying between Seattle and Heathrow, replacing the daily service operated by Delta.

A daily non-stop service between New York-JFK and Manchester will commence May 25, 2017 replacing the service currently operated by Delta. Delta will resume service for the winter 2017.

Virgin Atlantic executive VP Erik Varwijk said: "We are delighted to further optimise our joint services between the U.K. and the U.S. Our most fuel efficient Boeing 787-9 aircraft will add additional capacity to the successful Seattle route, enabling more customers to enjoy the Virgin Atlantic experience on this brand new aircraft.

"In Manchester, deploying our Airbus A330-300 aircraft on this route will allow us to further meet the growing demand from the Manchester market, now offering a total of six direct flights to the U.S. after the recently announced new services to Boston and San Francisco.

He added: "The network changes highlight the strength and flexibility of our joint venture, allowing us to make smart decisions that ensure the right aircraft are on the right routes for our customers."

Delta to launch summer Boston-Edinburgh flights

Delta Air Lines is to begin a summer Boston service to Edinburgh next year, its second route to the Scottish capital.
The US carrier will start the flights on 24 May and operate them in conjunction with joint-venture partner Virgin Atlantic, using Boeing 757-200ERs configured with 163 seats, including 16 in business class.
SkyTeam member Delta already operates daily flights to Edinburgh from New York JFK.
"Boston is our fastest-growing international hub and a daily service from Edinburgh in addition to our New York JFK route responds to increased demand for travel to the US and provides greater choice when it comes to planning trips for business or pleasure," states Delta's vice president of transatlantic, Roberto Ioriatti.
Edinburgh airport chief executive Gordon Dewar states: "North America has been one of our biggest growth markets, and there has been exceptional demand for those services this summer, so to add Boston with Delta is fantastic news for the airport and passengers as we seek to satisfy that demand."
The new route provides a boost for Edinburgh airport after low-cost carrier Norwegian last month announced it was pulling its transatlantic services from the Scottish capital, citing the impact of a likely delay in a reduction of airport passenger duty.
Norwegian, which had already dropped flights to Hartford, will from the end of March next year stop its Edinburgh flights to Newburgh's Stewart International airport and Providence.
KLM, one of Delta's transatlantic joint-venture partners, will begin flights to Boston from Amsterdam next summer. FG
