This daily service is currently bookable as a stand-alone flight, as connection to/from other Copa Airlines service is not required at present time, unlike its European codeshare service.

Sarebbe interessante conoscerne i motivi. Forse scarse prenotazioni?

Emirates Cancels Planned Panama City Launch due late-March 2016

Emirates in this week’s schedule update has removed planned operational schedule for Dubai – Panama City route, previously scheduled to commence on 31MAR16. The airline originally planned to operate this route on daily basis with Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. Reservations for this route, including Copa Airlines’ CM-coded flight numbers, is no longer available, as well as Emirates – Copa Airlines codeshare service via Panama to Colombia.

Previously planned schedule as follow.

Further delays to Emirates’ Panama launch

Published: 03/03/2016 - Filed under: News »
Emirates has delayed the launched of its new non-stop route from Dubai to Panama for a second time.
The Gulf carrier had originally planned to launch the service on February 1, but this was delayed until March 31 “in order to fully receive all regulatory codeshare approvals from the wider Central and Latin America region” (see news January 14).
However in a statement Emirates now says that the service will launch by the end of 2016 or early 2017.
A spokesperson for the airline said:
“We firmly believe in the potential of Central America, and remain keen to link the Emirates network to the region.
“We will retain staff in Panama City to continue developing our presence, as well as commercial opportunities with our industry partners, and will launch by the end of 2016 or early 2017 as soon as conditions allow.
“The decision was made after an extensive review of all operational factors, including fleet utilisation and commercial demand from key markets against the global economic outlook.”
The new route would potentially become the world's longest non-stop commercial flight at just over 17 and a half hours (on the westbound service).
Lufthansa launched its own service between Frankfurt and Panama on March 2, having also delayed its launch from November (see news July 7, 2015).
This week Emirates launched a new non-stop option between Dubai and Auckland, with the westbound service taking around 17 hours and 15 minutes (see newsMarch 2).

Emirates Puts Latin America Hub on Hold Until 13 Nations Sign Up

  • States must back Copa Air code-share to make plan work: Clark
  • Panama base would divert Asian passenger flows through Dubai
Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul airline, put its plan to establish a hub in Panama connecting cities across Latin America with Asia on hold because government accords permitting cooperation with a key local carrier took too long to put in place.
Dubai-based Emirates has secured approvals from only three or four of the 13 countries from which it needs backing for a wide-ranging code-share deal with Panama City-based Copa Airlines SA, its president, Tim Clark, said at the ITB travel fair in Berlin.
Emirates initially aimed to commence flights to Panama in February, before slipping the date to March and then saying last week that services won’t commence until late 2016 or early 2017. The 8,590-mile trip using Boeing Co.’s 777-200LR, the longest-range jet, would set an endurance record of 17 hours and 35 minutes when headed westbound into prevailing winds.

“Panama was a sort of entry point for South and Central America for us and has huge potential, but we needed to get the aero-political structures in place,” Clark said. Flights via Dubai would offer access to western Asia, the Middle East and North Africa “in a very clean and easy way,” he said.

International Links

Emirates plans to retain staff already hired in Panama City while working to deliver the accord with Copa, which promotes its base at the capital’s Tocumen International Airport as “The Hub of the Americas.” The Panamanian national carrier averages daily flights, with the highest number of international services in Latin America, according to its website.
Copa last year ordered 61 Boeing 737 Max single-aisle jets worth $6.6 billion at list prices in the largest-ever deal between companies in the U.S. and Panama. The planes will replace older 737s among a fleet that numbers more than 70 single-aisle aircraft, according to the website.
“You may wonder why people would travel from Guatemala to Dubai -- or from Belize or San Salvador -- but we know there is quite a lot of business,” Clark said. “Panama itself is like a mini-Dubai when you look at some of the cities in Central and South America.”

Emirates mulls fifth freedom flights from Europe to Mexico, US

Emirates is considering multiple offers from Europe to open up new ‘fifth freedom’ flights to service the US and Central America.
In particular, it has held talks with Swiss authorities over the possibility of launching services from Zurich to Mexico City.
Emirates president Tim Clark said that while the airline has yet to “solicit” requests to open up such a route fearing the “disruptive” effect on the market, it is an option for the future.
“The opportunities are there for us, we’ve had multiple offers,” Clark said. “The Swiss have made it absolutely clear that they’d like us to fly to the States from [Switzerland].

“Whether we’re going to do that or not is neither here nor there but it’s interesting to note that with European pressures mirroring a little bit of what’s going on in the US, many of the constituent parts of the European Union (EU) have come to us and said, would you operate on a fifth freedom basis across to the US.
“So they want us to go there, we haven’t solicited a request for us to go there, but they see that we add value to what they’re doing and they’d like us to be there.”
Fifth freedom rights allow an airline to fly between two foreign countries so long as the flight originates or ends in the airline’s home country.
Emirates already offers fifth freedom services between Milan and New York, Sydney and Bangkok, Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur and others.
It has been reported that the UAE is seeking to establish a hub in Budapest from which to service flights from central Europe to the US as an extension of its daily Dubai-Budapest service.
Saif Al Suwaidi, director general of the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, reportedly told The National in an interview in March that the country was seeking to secure fifth freedom rights for services to two points beyond Hungary.
Clark told reporters on Tuesday that he was not aware of such a pending deal.
“Someone mentioned Hungary before – that’s an interesting one, I haven’t heard that before,” he said. “But I’m quite sure…I was in Budapest just last week – it’s a fabulous city - and certainly they could do with more air services, and there have been offers made to us.”
However, he echoed earlier comments made by Emirates chairman and CEO Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum that Emirates was focusing on direct operations in the short term.
Clark said: “As Sheikh Ahmed said, we are concentrating on a point-to-point operation at the moment. Our business model hinges on that and it’s important that we stay true to that – and we know the disruptive effect of fifth freedom operations, particularly with our American friends.
“But that’s not to say we wouldn’t consider this more seriously in the future.”
At a press conference to mark publication of Emirates’ 2015/16 annual results, Clark also said that negotiations were still ongoing to secure an effective codeshare agreement for its planned Dubai to Panama service, which was originally scheduled to launch this year.
“We’re still working on it, it’s still a work in progress,” he said. “It’s not going as quickly as I would have liked – trying to stitch together 13 countries in a bilateral and all the other bits and pieces is difficult – but we’re getting there.”
The delays are due to ongoing government bureaucracy, he said.
