WestJet announces service to London Gatwick

Airline selects first transatlantic wide-body destination

CALGARY, June 16, 2015 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced it has selected London, England as the first transatlantic destination from Canada for its wide-body Boeing 767-300 aircraft. Service from Canada to London will be through London Gatwick.

"This news marks the next phase in the international portion of our strategic plan," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial. "WestJet is at the right scale to make this step in our evolution. Combined with our low-cost approach and renowned people-driven service, we have the network, brand and infrastructure to successfully enter and grow in the wide-body market. We look forward to announcing, later this summer, our entire schedule and low-fare approach for the spring of 2016."

"Well-managed and efficient airports like Gatwick are ideal for low-cost airlines like WestJet," said Chris Avery, WestJet Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances and Corporate Development. "We love Gatwick as a convenient airport with great connectivity to central London and access to other low-cost airlines flying to points in Europe and beyond. We look forward to welcoming travellers from Gatwick through our network to destinations across Canada."

"Wide-body capability now allows us to serve London Gatwick from anywhere in Canada and brings into consideration more international destinations in the future. The Canadian cities we will fly from will be determined over the course of this summer," continued Bob Cummings. "We will meet with airports across the country to determine the most suitable ones we believe will meet our needs and those of our guests."

Further announcements on schedules, pricing and launch cities will be communicated later this summer with service commencing in spring 2016.

WestJet has taken delivery of its first Boeing 767-300ER, adding a widebody aircraft to its fleet for the first time.

The Calgary-based low-cost carrier (LCC) has operated an all-737 fleet since its founding in 1996, and in 2013 launched a Bombardier Q400 regional subsidiary called WestJet Encore. The airline is slated to take delivery of four 767-300ERs over the next eight months, with the fourth expected to arrive just before it launches 767 flights to London Gatwick in May 2016.

The first WestJet 767 will be used on flights between Toronto and Calgary for several months, the carrier said. The next two 767s will arrive this fall, and WestJet will launch 767 flights between western Canada and Hawaii and between Toronto and Montego Bay for its winter schedule in December.

The airline’s 767s will seat 262 passengers, including 24 in premium economy, but will have no first- or business-class seats. The aircraft will be able to fly up to 11 hr.

“The arrival of our first widebody aircraft opens the next chapter in the evolution and growth of Canada’s low-fare leader,” WestJet EVP-commercial Bob Cummings said in a statement.

WestJet advances global growth with multi-year distribution agreement with Amadeus

Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Posted by Travelweek Group
TORONTO — WestJet’s new multi-year agreement with Amadeus comes as the carrier gears up for international expansion, with new destinations on the horizon and more interline agreements designed to expand its global footprint.

Under the new agreement Amadeus subscribers worldwide get continued access via the Amadeus GDS to WestJet content. The agreement also provides continued access to the carrier’s ancillary offerings including options such as seat selection, baggage and priority boarding.

“As WestJet evolves as a global carrier, our new agreement with Amadeus will enable us to grow and deliver on the needs of travellers and travel professionals wherever they are located,” said WestJet’s Executive Vice-President, Commercial, Ed Sims.

WestJet recently announced the purchase of up to 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Last month WestJet confirmed that it is looking to add China flights, filing for regulatory approval with Transport Canada. According to reports WestJet has crunched the numbers on some 70 worldwide destinations, including more cities in Europe beyond the routes it already serves, as well as destinations in the South Pacific. Future options on the table for Europe reportedly include Amsterdam and Rome, and in the South Pacific, Tahiti and Fiji.
Scott Alvis, Chief Marketing Officer, Amadeus North America, says WestJet “believes in the value of a multi-channel strategy where travel agents and travellers can count on having access to the broadest range of their content and services.”

Earlier this year Alvis said that content is king when it comes to providing travel agents with the best booking solutions via GDS. “We have done a lot of work to make sure we are getting those ancillaries into the platform, for example, seat upgrades and baggage fees. Close to 80% of all airlines booking in the system have ancillaries that could be booked with them.”

He added: “We want our Points-of-Sale to serve that traveller as best as possible. We want to make sure we’ve got all that ancillary content, all the fare family content, available to the travel agents. So far we’ve been able to do that at a very nice pace.”

WestJet recently evolved its merchandising approach using Amadeus’ ancillary technologies, added Alvis. In 2016 the airline implemented Amadeus Airline Ancillary Services, which enables travel agents to book add-on services, as well as Amadeus Airline Fare Families, making its Econo, Flex, Plus Lowest and Plus Flexible bundled fare options available. “This enables travel professionals to best serve their customers by proposing the WestJet fares and options that best match traveller preferences.”
