Ryanair to reduce the number of flights from Riga by 30%

After the introduction of security fees at Riga International Airport, Irish low-fare airline Ryanair intends to reduce the number of flights to and from Riga by 30%, according to information obtained by LETA.

As of the new year, Ryanair plans to cancel its flights to Bristol (Great Britain), Bremen (Germany), and Tampere (Finland). The airline will also reduce the number of flights on eight of its routes, including such destinations as London, Milan, Rome and Brussels.

Ryanair calculates that the airport will lose approximately 300,000 passengers due to cancellations and reductions of the flights.

The airline has informed Transport Minister Aivis Ronis of its intentions.

The airline also informs that it no longer intends to create a regional base in Riga.

As reported, this past October, the Cabinet of Ministers accepted a proposal to introduce security fees at Riga International Airport, stipulating that EUR 6.5 (LVL 4.54) to EUR 7 (LVL 4.89) will have to be paid for each passenger.

The Transport Ministry previously pointed out that such fees are adequate to the required security measures that must be ensured by the airport.

Sarà applicata sui biglietti acquistati dal 1° gennaio 2012 e serve per sostituire i finanziamenti statali revocati da quest’anno.

E’ partita da ieri la nuova tassa sulla sicurezza all’aeroporto di Riga, che sarà applicata ai biglietti in vendita dal 1 gennaio 2012, per un importo di 6,5 euro (tranne che per Ryanair per i cui passeggeri l’aeroporto di Riga ha previsto procedure diverse).

Fino ad oggi le risorse per la sicurezza dell’aeroporto erano versate direttamente dallo stato lettone, dal proprio bilancio. Una misura che però costringeva a pagare per la sicurezza dell’aeroporto tutti i contribuenti lettoni, compresi quelli che non usufruiscono dei servizi dell’aeroporto.

Quindi la decisione del governo lettone di non finanziare più le misure di sicurezza dell’aeroporto, che peseranno invece nelle tasche dei singoli viaggiatori. La nuova tassa dovrebbe interessare circa il 40% dei viaggiatori, in quanto saranno esclusi quelli semplicemente in transito dall’aeroporto lettone.

Ryanair è l’unica compagnia che non ha accettato di includere la tassa sulla sicurezza nel prezzo del biglietto, quindi i viaggiatori di Ryanair dovranno pagare direttamente in aeroporto la tassa (7 euro, da pagare però in moneta locale, ovvero 4.92 lats). In questi anni il numero dei viaggiatori dello scalo lettone è risultato in costante aumento, fino ai 5 milioni di viaggiatori del 2011.

Quindi al gate ci sarà una specie di casello: "Chi siete? Cosa portate? 4.92 lats!"

Security charge

In order to guarantee the highest security level for the passengers and the airport personnel the airport must observe a number of international aviation security requirements.

Until 1 January 2012 the security function at Riga International Airport was financed from the state budget which means that the security services were paid for by all the taxpayers in Latvia, including those who seldom or never travel by air. As the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia has adopted a decision not to finance the security at the airport with the state budget funds any more, new Cabinet Regulation No 823 was issued „On the charges for security and rescue measures carried out on the airfield”. The new Regulation stipulates that the security charge from now on will be collected from passengers.

The security charge must be paid only by the passengers departing from Riga International Airport. The new procedure enters into force as of 1 January 2012. This means that those passengers who have bought their air tickets by 31 December 2011 are released from the security charge.

What services are covered by the security charge?

The security charge is collected for the passenger, their hold and carry-on baggage security screening, the airport security and crisis management (including rescue operations) as well as for aircraft flight safety and civil aviation security supervision provided by the state agency "Civilās aviācijas aģentūra" .

How big is the charge and who must pay it?

The airlines must include this charge into the ticket price; however, the carrier RYANAIR did not agree to include the charge into its ticket price, therefore Riga Airport will collect the charge instead of the airline. Only the RYANAIRT passengers will have this additional inconvenience. The amount of the security charge for RYANAIR passengers is 7 euros*, payable by departing passengers before departure.
If the passenger pays the security charge via the airline, the amount of the charge is 6.5 euros or 4.57 lats.
if the airport collects the security charge, the amount of the charge is 7 euros or 4.92 lats. This amount is payable only by the RYANAIR passengers.

Must all the departing passengers pay the charge?

The security charge is not collected from transit and transfer passengers and those passengers who are under 2 years of age. Those passengers who have bought their air tickets by 31 December 2011 are also released from the security charge. In this case, the passenger at the security check must show the purchase date of the air ticket by presenting to the officer the printout of the ticket booking confirmation received from RYANAIR by e-mail.

Where can RYANAIR passengers pay the security charge?

Payment can be made by RYANAIR passengers as follows:
while checking in at Riga Airport (by bank card);
at the airline RYANAIR ticket office at Riga Airport (by cash or bank card);
at the airport services office „Welcome to Riga!” (Arrivals Sector E - by cash or bank card).
Will it be possible to pay the security charge on the Internet?

The administration of Riga International Airport is currently working on additional solutions to make the payment procedure easier, including the option to pay the charge on the Internet.

Will RYANAIR passengers have any other problems due to the fact that the carrier has not included the security charge into the ticket price?

In order to avoid delays the administration of Riga International Airport kindly requests RYANAIR passengers to arrive at the airport for checking in and payment of the security charge at least two and a half hours before the departure.

Non credo proprio la tassa vada nelle tascje della compagnia!! Altrimenti ryanair la avrebbe messa eccome ;)!!!! Ma vada all'aeroporto per garantire le misure di sicurezza!!!

Se non mi sbaglio, nel 2011, sia AirBaltic che Aeroporto di Riga hanno avuto record di pax. Il socio in minoranza di AirBaltic che per un momento ha avuto problemi a causa del fallimento di KrajBanka, ha garantito la sua quota. Speriamo che le cose per questa compagnia andranno migliorando.
Tornando in tema, mi piace il comportamento di Ryanair per rifiutare questa nuova tassa, ma in questo modo i pax ci vanno a perdere (tempo e denaro visto che il pagamento in aeroporto costa +0.5€). Il pax Ryanair deve fare fila al checkin, fila per il pagamento di questa tassa, fila per il boarding e fila per prendere posto. E un pocchino troppo.

perdon, forse ho espresso male l'idea.
la tassa va a discapito anche di Air Baltic (pure loro pagano), però se FR riduce la preseza, singifica che Air Baltic ha più mercato a disposizione. in questo senso chiedo se la tassa ptorebbe essere positiva per Air Baltic?!
 
Per una volta che il costo di un servizio viene spostato dal contribuente all'utente finale (merce rara di questi tempi, purtroppo), bisognerebbe essere soddisfatti della notizia (anche se il contribuente è quello di un paese straniero, poco importa). A FR non piace la cosa? Ponti d'oro...
 
Ryanair in questo ultimo periodo sta rendendo la prenotazione ed il viaggio di milioni di passeggeri una cosa super "piacevole"!
Spero che prima o poi se ne rendano conto!
A partire dalla prenotazione il passeggero dovrebbe trovarsi davanti ad una cosa semplice, senza intoppi e senza sorprese finali! Perche' non lanciare una versione del sito per il telefono cellulare? Pure Jet2com la ha ..
Vedremo quando se ne accorgeranno che i passeggeri cominciano ad essere stufi ad essere trattati cosi!

chiedo scusa per l'OT ma non resisto alla tentazione: se FR va male sono solo che contento. Un paio di volte ho dovuto prenderli ma li evito come la peste a meno che non debba andare in quel posto esatto dove volano e non debba pernottare più di due notti!
pongo il mio commento perchè (al di fuori della mia opinione personale) concordo con te che FR si sta facendo sempre più meno appetibile e non riesco a capire se sia un piano che avrà successo nel medio-termine o qualcosa che, come mi sembra, porterà più danni ma mi parrebbe strano dato il management sempre acuto della compagnia.
 
Segnalo, per chi dovesse partire da Riga con Ryanair, che questa singolare procedura a RIX è ancora in vigore.
Peraltro Ryanair, che dà informazioni piuttosto chiare su altri aspetti del volo (check-in, bagagli, ecc.) anche inviando email dopo l'acquisto, non esplicita invece l'obbligo di pagare questa security charge (7€) a parte nè durante nè dopo l'acquisto del biglietto.
Dalle indicazioni che ho visto in aeroporto mi pare (ma non ho verificato) che si possa pagare anche tramite smartphone. Ho preferito l'alternativa "vintage" della coda in biglietteria :)

C'è una macchinetta automatica (che non usa nessuno, ma funziona bene) proprio di fronte allo sportello dove si paga la tassa.
