Grazie ;)

Norwegian Air Targets California in Dreamliner-Led Low-Cost Push

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA (NAS) will offer flights from Scandinavia to California using the latest batch of Boeing Co. (BA) 787 Dreamliner planes it says have made long-haul discount routes newly viable.

Services linking Stockholm with Los Angeles will commence next March, to be followed by flights from Copenhagen in April and Oslo in June, with an introductory fare of $236 each way. Oakland will be served from Stockholm and Oslo starting in May.

“We believe that the U.S is low-hanging fruit,” Chief Executive Officer Bjorn Kjos said today in a press briefing in the Swedish capital, adding that there are few direct flights from Scandinavia to West Coast cities. “People love to fly cheap and they love to fly far.”

Norwegian Air is leveraging the all-composite 787’s lower operating costs as it seeks to offer discounted trans-Atlantic trips at a profit and succeed where long-haul no-frills carriers such as Laker Airways have failed. The company will hire as many as 350 U.S. staff and add bases at existing destinations New York and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Kjos said in an interview.

Fornebu-based Norwegian began long-haul operations in May and currently has five weekly services from Stockholm and Oslo to Bangkok and six from the two Nordic cities to New York.

Sales Success

Flights to the U.S. metropolis from Copenhagen will commence in February, according to a statement. The carrier will also add a second Florida destination, connecting Oslo with the theme-park resort town of Orlando from May, it said today.

Flights to Fort Lauderdale from the three Nordic bases have already been announced and begin in November. Ticket sales to New York, Bangkok and the Florida city have been “tremendous,” with most summer services fully booked, Kjos said, even after initial trips had to use Airbus SAS A340 jets when 787 handovers were delayed by battery glitches that grounded the Boeing model.

The CEO said in March that the longer-term aim for the Dreamliner, of which there are eight on order, is to focus on destinations in Asia, tapping demand for affordable long-haul trips among the emerging middle class.

The company has applied for a permanent air operator’s certificate in Ireland to establish a low-cost domicile for the long-haul unit that would permit the addition of flights to cities such as Beijing, Kjos said. Approval may take six months.

Norwegian, founded in 1993, switched to a discount model in 2001, emulating Ryanair Holdings Plc (RYA) and EasyJet Plc (EZJ) to sharpen short-haul competition with state-backed Nordic No. 1 SAS Group AB, and ranks as Europe’s fourth-largest low-cost airline.

The company last year ordered 222 Boeing and Airbus single-aisle jets valued at 127 billion kroner ($21 billion).

Norwegian and UK's London Gatwick Airport signed (28-Nov-2013) a seven year partnership contract, with the carrier planning to open several new routes at the airport in the future, including long-haul routes. Norwegian started UK operations at Gatwick in 2009, moving‎ fromStansted Airport. In 2013, nearly two million Norwegian passengers were handled at the airport, with service to 25 destinations across Europe. In 2014, the carrier's network at the airport will increase to 33 destinations across Europe and North America. Norwegian has also based four aircraft at Gatwick, with a further two aircraft planned for summer 2014. Part of their exciting plans for 2014 include the introduction of 'game changing' trans-Atlantic routes to New York, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale direct from Gatwick. The airline will be using Boeing 787 aircraft for these routes. The commercial agreement comes just weeks after the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) proposed to endorse Gatwick's approach to creating bespoke commercial arrangements between its airlines and the airport. Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos said: “Norwegian is delighted to have agreed a long term commercial partnership with London Gatwick. As one of the fastest growing airlines at the airport, Norwegian will continue offering our passengers at Gatwick an increasing route network and a high quality product at reasonable fares. We are particularly excited about the potential to serve long haul routes, and we have already announced the first three routes from London Gatwick to the US. Norwegian is very supportive of Gatwick’s runway expansion plan which would mean that the airport could offer even better operating facilities in the future.” London Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate added: “This partnership with Norwegian is a landmark in London Gatwick’s history. Four years after the end of the BAA monopoly at Gatwick, this deal marks the start of a new era for passengers bringing more competition to the aviation market. It will mean that passengers travelling with Norwegian will experience even more choice, lower fares and higher customer standards. So this is great news for passengers and UK businesses travelling to Europe and North America. This partnership deal also shows the shared vision and commitment both Norwegian and Gatwick have for London and the South East which is the largest, most exciting and vibrant travel market in the world. That commitment extends to Norwegian’s support for Gatwick’s need to build an additional runway by the mid-2020s.”

Quando verranno consegnati i primi 787-9? Parlo in generale non di Norwegian. Chi è il cliente di lancio di questa versione?

Norwegian aprirà basi crew negli USA (New York e Fort Lauderdale)

Norwegian opens crew bases in New York and Fort Lauderdale, and hires American crew members

The European airline Norwegian will soon open its first crew base in New York. The next base in Fort Lauderdale will be opened during the first quarter of 2014. Norwegian is the first European carrier to establish crew bases in the Unites States and to offer several hundred jobs to American crew. Norwegian’s entry into the U.S. market will also create millions (?????) of jobs in the travel- and tourism industry. During 2014, 300 American crew members will be working for the company. In its first year of full operation, Norwegian will fly one million passengers in and out of the U.S.

Norwegian continues to expand internationally by establishing two crew bases in the United States. Norwegian is one of Boeing´s largest customers worldwide with nearly 200 aircraft on order (Boeing 737 MAX, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 737-800). In addition, the company has 100 Boeing 737MAX purchase options. Thousands of new jobs will be created over the coming years.

Norwegian started its long-haul operation in 2013 with routes between Thailand and the U.S. and Europe. In 2014, the route network will expand to include 14 routes between the U.S. and Europe.

“Norwegian´s goal is to bring innovative service at a low fare to the U.S. market with brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Our goal is that everyone should afford to fly. In our opinion, air fare between the U.S. and Europe has been far too expensive. To maintain an effective operation, crew bases will be placed at the start or end of the route segment and we are happy to announce the establishment of our first crew bases in the U.S.,” said Norwegian’s CEO Bjørn Kjos.

“Around 170 cabin crew members have been recruited in New York and Fort Lauderdale, and we are hoping to see many American crew members on board our Dreamliners and the new 737MAX in the years to come. We also encourage American pilots to come work for us. To do so, they will need an EASA license,” Kjos added.

Please find pictures of some of our new crew members attached (the pictures were taken at one of the cabin courses in New York).

Wages and conditions are locally highly competitive and follow U.S. laws and regulations regarding social security, taxes, etc.

Norwegian’s business model is based on the Open Skies regime, global competition and the fact that Norwegian flies its customers point to point in all markets, either within Europe or on long-haul routes between continents. Traditional airlines grow outside their home markets by entering into joint ventures, co-operation or alliances – and let their locally based alliance partners fly their customers.

Norwegian started its long-haul operation in 2013 by offering non-stop service between Thailand and the U.S. and Europe. In 2014, the route network will expand. Norwegian now offers routes to several destinations in Europe from New York, San Francisco, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles and Orlando.

Competition benefits customers and creates millions
(??? aridaje) of jobs

History shows that the entry of low-cost carriers into new markets have the potential of almost doubling total traffic volumes, creating millions of new jobs in the travel- and tourism-related industries locally. This is also likely to happen in the transatlantic market. The transatlantic market has been controlled by three immunized alliances and in reality the total capacity has not increased significantly over the last 3-5 years - but the prices have. Clearly this does not create the incentives necessary to increase travel and tourism across the Atlantic.

Norwegian is the first, but will definitively not be the last low-cost carrier to enter this market.

Increased completion benefits the customer who will get inexpensive and affordable fares. In addition, the travel-related industry will benefit greatly through the creation of new jobs.
