Emirates apre Stoccolma

[h=1]Leak of the Week: September start for Emirates Stockholm service[/h]
lead-emirates-image.jpg
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A new route this year please): As we had suggested in January, Emirates was looking to add to its Scandinavian offer this year – the MEB3 airline has just announced that it will start flying to the Swedish capital on 4 September, with daily 777-300 flights. Will they still ‘Take a Chance’ on Boston and Miami?
The first of the three routes we expected Emirates Airline to launch this year has just been announced – a daily service to Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Starting on 4 September, the route will be flown by the airline’s three-class, 354-seat 777-300s, and will add to Emirates’ existing Scandinavian offer, which until now was limited to a daily operation to Copenhagen. Two further destinations, Boston and Miami in the US, were also included in the anna.aero prophecy, but there has been no further news with regards to these new routes – yet.
[h=2]The Name of the Game: Feeding the hub[/h]As with most of the airline’s single daily operations in Europe, the new daily flight will depart Stockholm Arlanda around lunchtime (at 1355hrs) and arrive in Dubai International Airport in the late evening (at 2225hrs). According to Innovata data for December 2013, this will mean that the new Stockholm Arlanda service will connect to up to 47 onward destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia, in its bank of departures from 0055 (to Tehran) until 0440 (to Johannesburg).
[h=2]Voulez-vous become #1[/h]As we all know, when Emirates enters a market, it looks to assert itself in the only way it knows how – to become number one in terms of weekly frequency and seats, a strategic move that helps it to dictate the market. Looking at the three airlines which will offer competing services in this market, Norwegian’s winter-only, thrice-weekly 186-seat 737-800s will provide direct competition for half of the year, while perhaps a sterner test will come in the form of Qatar Airways’ daily connection to its own hub in Doha, operated thrice-weekly by its 238-seat A330-200s, and four weekly with its higher capacity, 289-seat A330-300s. However, due to the use of its larger capacity 777-300s, Emirates will immediately create a 12% gap over its MEB3 rival in terms of weekly seats, while matching it on frequency.

[h=2]Sweet Honey, Honey for Stockholm[/h]“We are happy to welcome Emirates to Stockholm Arlanda and it has shown great confidence in our market by starting up with a daily B777,” said Swedavia’s Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Route Development, when anna.aero asked her to comment on the news. “With Sweden being a heavily underserved market, and having the largest passenger (and cargo) market in Scandinavia, this is something that I think Emirates has recognized,” she added. However, Emirates’ new Dubai service is not the only Middle East new route success that the Swedish capital has secured recently – Iran Aseman Airlines plans to launch its first European service on 2 May from Tehran with A340s.

Emirates prepares for Stockholm launch

Emirates airline is stepping up its preparations for the launch of its Stockholm service - a move set to boost its presence in Northern Europe. Emirates gave the local Swedish travel trade and media a preview of the airline's award winning hospitality.

Emirates will provide a daily, non-stop passenger flights from Stockholm to its hub in Dubai from 4th September. The new direct service, bringing more convenience and reduced travelling times to passengers, will be served by a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, offering eight private suites in First Class, 42 lie-flat seats in Business Class and 304 seats in Economy Class.

In the morning, representatives from Emirates led by Hubert Frach, Divisional Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West, met local Swedish media at the Grand Hotel.

"Sweden's capital Stockholm is a key city for Emirates in Northern Europe. Emirates will provide significant links for trade and tourism with one-stop flights to the Far East, West Asia, Middle East, and Australia and beyond through our Qantas partnership, with a product and service proposition that represents superb value for money," said Mr Frach.

"Ahead of the launch of our new service, we are off to a promising start and we expect bookings to grow. Events such as the Emirates product presentation will help raise awareness about the airline and drive sales. Dubai is a well-known destination for Swedish travellers along with Bangkok and Beijing, which are popular destinations in Asia for leisure and business. These travel patterns provide a solid foundation to build upon with the help of our six-continent route network," added Mr Frach.

In the evening, almost 400 guests from the travel trade converged at Cirkus for a high-profile product presentation event to introduce the airline and Dubai. The evening activities were hosted by Petra Mede, a popular TV personality, and the Cotton Club band headed up the entertainment. Guests were also able to experience the Emirates award-winning First Class suite, which was on display.

From 4th September Emirates' flight EK158 will depart Stockholm at 1355hrs arriving in Dubai at 2255hrs and EK 157 will depart Dubai at 0715hrs and land in Stockholm at 1200hrs the same day.

Emirates operates services to 134 destinations in 77 countries from Dubai. Earlier this year Emirates launched services to Warsaw, Algiers and Haneda. Along with Stockholm, Emirates has announced plans to launch services Clark in the Philippines beginning on 1 October; the same day as it begins its transatlantic route between Milan and New York.

A total of 130 Swedish nationals are employed across The Emirates Group, including 52 Cabin Crew.
