• Including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi, Budapest
• Flight frequency increases on 27 routes

airberlin is expanding its hubs in 2012 and improving the route offerings. From Berlin, Dusseldorf and Vienna, airberlin kicks off its summer schedule – partially in place since February – to new destinations and with increased flight frequencies on selected routes. At Berlin’s new airport Berlin Brandenburg (BER), the airline will expand its flight schedule from 9,000 to 10,500 weekly connecting flights at around 750 departures per week. airberlin will offer 70 direct flights from the new airport including five intercontinental routes. Last year, numerous codeshare agreements with future oneworld® partners were also added.

Today, at the International Tourism Fair (ITB) in Berlin, airberlin CEO Hartmut Mehdorn announced: “We have thoroughly reviewed our schedule in recent months. New destinations have been added, efficient routes have been expanded. What was inefficient, has been eliminated.” He added: “We are a network carrier offering global connections to our passengers, thus our schedule will reflect a greater emphasis on our hubs.”

New routes in 2012

Berlin – Los Angeles is a new connection. Starting 11th May, airberlin departs three times a week to the city on the West Coast of the United States. airberlin will fly from Dusseldorf to Las Vegas twice-weekly starting 10th May. airberlin has been offering the daily Berlin – Budapest route since the end of February 2012. Effective May 1st, passengers can reach the Polish city of Gdansk twice daily on weekdays and once a day on Saturdays and Sundays. Once-weekly flights to Windhoek from Berlin start in May 2012 and flights from Dusseldorf to Mombasa continue as in winter 2011/12. A new addition to the flight programme is the weekly flight from Friedrichshafen to Ibiza.

Flights from Berlin to Abu Dhabi began 15th January 2012 and will increase from four times a week to daily with the summer schedule. A daily airberlin flight from Dusseldorf to Abu Dhabi will also begin 25th March. From this Middle Eastern city, airberlin operates a daily connection to Phuket.

NIKI, the Austrian airline owned by the airberlin group, has been offering a new thrice-weekly connection to Tel Aviv from the Vienna hub since 20th February. A weekly flight to Mahon, the capital of the Balearic island of Menorca, will also be added. In addition, there will be flights twice a week from Salzburg to Olbia on Sardinia.

2012 flight frequency increases

airberlin will expand its offerings this year on 27 established connections. Among long-haul flights, three more flights from Berlin to New York will be added. Daily flights to the Big Apple will start in May. San Francisco and Miami flights from Dusseldorf will be increased by one, resulting in three or possibly five flights per week.

On the routes from Berlin to Scandinavia, three daily flights will be operated Monday through Friday, starting in May. Flight frequencies from Berlin to the Italian cities of Catania and Naples will be increased. Also starting in May, airberlin will fly from Dusseldorf to Venice twice a day. Flight frequencies to Naples will also be increased. The programme from Zurich to Olbia and Brindisi will be expanded, as well as Zurich to Palma de Mallorca. Starting summer 2012, Dusseldorf will offer 38 flights to the popular holiday island. 21 flights per week from Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart will depart for Palma.

The airberlin group will also expand its offerings from Austria. NIKI will increase flight frequencies from the Vienna hub to Belgrade and Copenhagen to six or possibly eight flights. Flights depart twice a day for Belgrade and three times a day for Copenhagen. NIKI has already implemented flights three times a day to Sofia and Bucharest. Further expansions are planned from Vienna to Barcelona. The route from Salzburg to Palma de Mallorca will be served by up to nine flights per week and offered daily starting summer 2012.

Codeshares with oneworld partners

airberlin will enter the oneworld airline alliance on 20th March 2012. In the last year, the airline has been preparing intensively for membership. This includes the formation of bilateral agreements with partner airlines to operate flights under common flight numbers. Such codeshare agreements have been concluded with American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Royal Jordanian, S7 and Japan Airlines. In addition, airberlin topbonus members can already start collecting and redeeming miles from selected oneworld partners. From 20 March this will expand to the whole route network of the oneworld alliance.
