Lufthansa board OK's 1 bln euro of plane orders

By Jan Hromadko
FRANKFURT -(MarketWatch)- German flagship airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA.XE) said Thursday its supervisory board has approved an order for 12 new jets for its long-haul passenger business and regional European traffic.
The total transaction volume is around EUR1 billion for jets to be ordered from Airbus--a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. NV (EAD.FR) and Embraer SA of Brazil, the company said in a written statement.
The company said it plans to order two further A380 jets--the world's largest passenger aircraft--as well as one Airbus A330-300 from Airbus.
The planes will be used on the long-haul passenger routes of its Lufthansa brand, the company added.
Additionally, four Airbus A320s as well as five Embraer195s will be ordered and have been earmarked for the Lufthansa regional fleet of aircraft, the company said.
The first planes will be delivered in 2012, Lufthansa added.

Notizia confermata anche dalla compagnia in via ufficiale:

29.09.11
Additional short-term demand will be met by Airbus and Embraer aircraft

The Lufthansa Supervisory Board has approved an order for a total of twelve new aircraft for the Lufthansa Group. Of that number, two Airbus A380s and one Airbus A330-300 will be deployed for Lufthansa German Airlines on long-haul routes for an interim period. The decision was taken by the Board at its meeting today.

There are also plans to order four Airbus A320s for Lufthansa German Airlines. In addition, five new Embraer195s will augment the Lufthansa Regional fleet. The new, modern, fuel-efficient aircraft will be delivered to the Group in stages from 2012. The order has a list-price value of about one billion euros.

Commenting on the decision, Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Christoph Franz, said: “The moderate expansion of Lufthansa’s passenger fleet will serve primarily to ensure that we can meet short-term requirements while modernising and consolidating our European fleet until such time as new aircraft technologies are available. It is the latest step in our ongoing strategy of deploying a modern fleet in terms of fuel efficiency, operating costs, noise and emissions. At the same time, the additional order for the Airbus A380 and A330 will underpin our plans on long-haul routes in the medium term. Along with the aircraft we have already ordered, which will join our fleet over the next few years, it will increase our ability to take targeted action and respond flexibly to fluctuations in demand or market changes.”

The order will be financed from the Group’s cash reserves or from external sources.

Sul comunicato della compagnia mi sfugge il significato di questa frase: "two Airbus A380s and one Airbus A330-300 will be deployed for Lufthansa German Airlines on long-haul routes for an interim period".

EMBRAER SELLS FIVE MORE E195 JETS TO LUFTHANSA
Aeronaves serão operadas pela Air Dolomiti, empresa italiana parceira da Lufthansa

São José dos Campos, September 29, 2011 – Embraer and Deutsche Lufthansa AG signed a contract, today, for the purchase of five additional EMBRAER 195 (E195) jets. The aircraft will be operated by Verona-based Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa’s regional partner in Italy. The value of the acquisition, at list price, is USD 226 million. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2012.

Air Dolomiti currently operates five E195s. The additional aircraft will see Air Dolomiti’s E-Jets fleet double. In response to the growing demand within Europe, the new equipment will be used to add flights on domestic routes and increase frequencies between Verona and Lufthansa’s Munich hub. The E195s will be configured with the new Slim Seat Plus, an ergonomically designed seat that is comfortable, yet weighs less, to help reduce fuel consumption.

“Lufthansa’s follow-on order demonstrates the proven ability of the E195 to operate in the highly competitive European market,” said Paulo César de Souza e Silva, President, Embraer Commercial Aviation. “The doubling of Air Dolomiti’s E-Jets fleet is an endorsement of the airline’s confidence in the aircraft’s compatibility with the carrier’s expanding network.”

Nico Buchholz, Executive Vice President Lufthansa Group Fleet Management, said: “I am delighted that this additional order will enable us to secure the development of our medium-haul fleet. It is the next logical step in our strategy of ongoing fleet modernisation with regards to fuel efficiency, operating costs, noise and emissions.”

With this new order, Lufthansa will be the operator of the largest fleet of E-Jets in Europe. The company has ordered 43 E190s and E195s since May 2007. Today, 28 E-Jets are in service with three of Lufthansa’s five regional partner carriers: Lufthansa CityLine, Air Dolomiti and Augsburg Airways.
