Air France-KLM to acquire up to 60 A350 XWBs
A350XWB continues to attract world class airlines

The Air France-KLM Group has announced its intention to sign for up to 60 A350 XWB aircraft, of which 25 A350-900 will be firmed up shortly. The aircraft will become an essential pillar in the group’s long-haul fleet modernization strategy.

"We are honoured that our all new, extra efficient A350 XWB will contribute to Air France-KLM’s long-term success", said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer - Customers. "The A350 XWB's unbeatable economics and environmental credentials will establish the aircraft as the future backbone of the airline's long-haul fleet. We take this decision as a testimony of confidence in our brand and products".

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) Family is an all-new long range product line comprising three models capable of flying between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layouts on flights of up to 8,500 nautical miles.

In total the Air France-KLM Group currently operates a fleet of 191 Airbus aircraft, comprising six A380s, 26 A330s, 15 A340s, 24 A321s, 58 A320s, 44 A319s and 18 A318s. With this new order Air France-KLM joins the expanding group of airlines to have a member of each Airbus aircraft family in their fleet.

By end of August, Airbus has recorded 567 A350 XWBs firm orders from 35 customers.

Air France KLM annonce la commande de 110 appareils Airbus A350 et Boeing 787​
Le Conseil d'administration d’Air France KLM réuni le 15 septembre a approuvé la commande
par le Groupe de 110 appareils long-courriers (50 commandes fermes et 60 options), sous
réserve de la finalisation des discussions en cours avec les constructeurs.
Cette première commande d’avions long-courriers commune à Air France et KLM vise au
remplacement à moyen terme des appareils de 200 / 350 sièges actuellement présents dans la
flotte et l'accompagnement de la croissance de l'activité du Groupe.
Ces acquisitions sont dimensionnées pour être financées par le cash flow généré par les
opérations du Groupe.
Sur la base du plan de flotte prévisionnel, cette commande devrait conduire le Groupe à opérer
73 appareils de nouvelle génération à l’horizon 2024 : 43 Airbus A350-900 et 30 Boeing 787-9.
Le premier appareil Boeing 787-9 entrera en service chez KLM en 2016 ; le premier Airbus
A350-900 entrera en service chez Air France en 2018. A terme, les deux compagnies opéreront
les deux types d'appareil.
Le choix de la motorisation du Boeing 787-9 sera effectué ultérieurement. En revanche, les
Airbus A350-900 seront équipés du moteur Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, seule motorisation
proposée pour cet appareil par le constructeur.
Ces nouvelles familles d’avions permettront une réduction de la consommation carburant de
plus de 15% et une réduction importante des émissions sonores et gazeuses, confirmant les
engagements du Groupe en matière d’environnement et de développement durable. Air France
KLM est en effet inclus dans le Dow Jones Sustainability Index depuis 2004 où il est le leader
du secteur « Transports et loisirs ».
Dans le cadre de cette commande, Air France Industries KLM Engineering&Maintenance,
branche de maintenance aéronautique du Groupe, confirme sa volonté de se positionner
comme un acteur du marché de l'entretien de ces appareils et de leurs moteurs.
A l’issue de cette approbation, des protocoles d'accord vont être signés avec Airbus, Boeing et
Rolls Royce ; la finalisation des contrats étant prévue avant la fin de l'année.​

d'une évaluation détaillée faisant apparaître tous les avantages de chacun des appareils,
notamment leurs performances énergétiques et environnementales »​

Gourgeon, directeur général d’Air France KLM. Peter Hartman, président du directoire de KLM,
a ajouté : «
Leur intégration dans la flotte du Groupe nous permettra de continuer à exploiter

PARIS, September 16, 2011 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] is delighted that Air France-KLM Group has selected the 787 Dreamliner as part of its long-haul fleet renewal, with an intention to purchase 25 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for 25 more.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an all-new commercial jetliner that brings new efficiencies to airlines and delivers superior comfort to passengers. The airplane features the industry’s largest windows, a lower cabin altitude and cleaner air. These features combine to allow passengers to arrive at their destinations more refreshed.
The 787 Dreamliner is the fastest-selling twin-aisle airplane in aviation history, with more than 800 orders from 56 customers around the world. The Air France-KLM announcement is not included in this total.
Nine French companies partner with Boeing on the 787 Dreamliner. They include Dassault Systèmes (software solutions), Labinal (wiring), Latécoère (passenger doors), Messier-Bugatti (electric brakes), Messier-Dowty (main and nose landing gear), Michelin (tyres), Radiall (connectors), Thales (electric power conversion system, flight display, in-flight entertainment system), and Zodiac (emergency slides, primary electrical distribution and various equipments).
The Air France-KLM Group is a long-time and valued customer with a large Boeing fleet of 188 airplanes in operation.
Boeing looks forward to finalizing the details of the agreement by the end of the year, at which time it will be posted to the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website.

Quello che trovo interessante nel comunicato di stampa di AF è

1) si parla di B789 25 firm + 25 option e di A359 25 firm + 35 options (comunicati Boeing e Airbus). Però nel comunicato AF si legge:
"Sur la base du plan de flotte prévisionnel, cette commande devrait conduire le Groupe à opérer
73 appareils de nouvelle génération à l’horizon 2024 : 43 Airbus A350-900 et 30 Boeing 787-9."
E' come confermassero già da ora che convertiranno (parte del)le options. O ne prenderanno qualcuno in leasing?

2) gli A359 per forza di cosa monteranno RR. Per i B789 la scelta è ancora da fare. Poi si legge:

Possibile che vedremo B789 con motorizzazione RR? Sarebbe uno choc, dopo la storia lunga di AF con GE.
 
PR di Rolls-Royce. Sembrano contenti. Però non ci sono indizzi riguardo al B789:

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, today welcomed Air France-KLM Group to its family of Trent XWB engine operators, following an announcement of the airline’s intention to select the Airbus A350-900.
Rolls-Royce will now work closely with Air France-KLM Group to finalise an agreement linked to this announcement, which covers up to 60 aircraft, 25 of which are planned to be firm orders in the near term.
Mark King, Rolls-Royce President – Civil Aerospace, said: “This will be the first time we have supplied large engines to Air France-KLM Group and we look forward to building on the positive relationship we have established during the aircraft evaluation process. The Trent XWB test results are already showing it to be the most efficient large aero engine available on the market today.”
 
Sui media francesi dicono che in realtà l'ordine è stato di 60 787 e di 60 A350. Però pur di non fare apparire Boeing come vincitore del'ordine in sfavore di Airbus, KLM ha preso altri 10 787 in leasing da ILFC in un ordine separato già uscito lo scorso luglio.

Pensa te cosa non ci si deve inventare per non scontentare la politica.

Si può ipotizzare che KLM opererà i 787 e AF i A350 oppure sarà un mix?

Nel comunicato c'è chiaramente scritto che entrambi i vettori opereranno i due tipi di aerei:
"A terme, les deux compagnies opéreront les deux types d'appareil."
 
Sbaglio o l'A350 avrà una capacità simile al B777? Che senso ha ordinarlo?

Comunque, ça va sans dire, tanto di cappello ad Air France.
 
Ci vuole un certo coraggio a compare 2 aerei finora virtuali tutti sulla carta. Il 787 non é ancora in servizio dopo anni di ritardi. Il 350 é solo sulla carta. Ovviamente questa fiducia a scatola chiusa sarà stata ricompensa da consistenti sconti.
