Canary Airport Tax Waiver Continues into 2012
The Canary Islands tourist sector received a much needed boost last week as the President of Spain, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, announced that airport taxes will continue to be waived in the Canary Islands into 2012. The airport tax waiver in the Canaries has been attributed with helping the tourist sector in the archipelago to recover from the worst effects of the recession. And budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet have been able to land tax free in the islands since the start of 2010. An initiative which has also resulted in the creation of three new Ryanair hubs in the archipelago, an investment said to be worth some €400 million. On Lanzarote, local politicians believe that the tax waiver has helped to boost tourism by some 15% since it´s inception. A move that has benefitted both major hotel chains and independent owners of holiday villas in Lanzarote *, as arrivals and bookings have remained buoyant during the first six months of 2011.
