Adria Airways could file for bankruptcy
20/12/2010

Slovenian company Adria Airways may be about to file for bankruptcy, sources have claimed.

The state-owned airline is currently finding it difficult to repay its debt and may file for bankruptcy or go into receivership, local broadcaster Televizija Slovenija said.

At the present time, the Brnik-based company - which offers flights from Ljubljana to London - has €86 million (£73.32 million) in outstanding loans, which the banks will not extend. Nor will they approve new loans, Maks Tajnikar, the chairman of the company's management board, revealed.

The chairman added that the firm is looking to establish a regional alliance with other airline companies in the Balkans, as well as a strategic investor.

Adria Airways was founded when Slovenia attained independence and began its first charter flights in 1961. The airline flies passengers to over 20 European cities on 13 aircraft.

It carried 1,026,016 people between January and October 2010, a reduction on the 1,143,542 it transported in the previous year.
