JAL to operate 787 to USA, Europe, South-east Asia

Japan Airlines (JAL) plans to operate the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on services to the USA, Europe and South-east Asia.

"JAL is keenly awaiting the delivery of the state-of-the-art jet, which we target to strategically utilise on new long-haul routes between Tokyo and America, Europe, as well as South-east Asia, afforded by the expansion of Haneda airport in October 2010," says JAL.

The 787 completed its maiden flight on 15 December in Seattle.

JAL has 35 orders and 20 options for the aircraft, and expects to receive its first 787 by early 2011.

Japan's All Nippon Airways says it is "taking all possible measures to ensure our preparation in receiving the new aircraft".

The carrier has 27 orders for the 787-8 and 28 orders for the 787-3, according to Innovata.

si anche secondo me è prematuro ... parlare di Jal a VCE... ricordo che si parlava di collegamenti diretti per la cina per il 2010..
 
Secondo Flight International (v.176/n.5219), Delta starebbe pensando di annullare il proprio ordine per il 787-8 ereditato da Northwest. Pare che DL (che sarebbe uno dei primi clienti a ricevere l'aereo) preferisca intraprendere una fase di consolidamento della propria flotta (1400 aerei in tutto fra mainline e RJ delle affiliate) piuttosto che investire in questo momento.
 
Dreamliner e la liberalizzazione necessaria

Il primo volo del Boeing 787, anche conosciuto come Dreamliner potrebbe apportare una rivoluzione nei cieli. Questo nuovo aereo, costituito in buona parte con materiali compositi (per questo è chiamato l’aereo di plastica), promette delle prestazioni molto elevate. È in grado di trasportare circa 250 persone con un raggio di circa 15 mila chilometri e con una maggiore efficienza di circa il 20 per cento rispetto agli altri velivoli presenti sul mercato. L’avanzamento tecnologico sembra essere molto importante, tanto che Airbus, il principale concorrente di Boeing, ha promesso di lanciare nel 2013 un aeromobile dalle caratteristiche molto simili, l’A350.
Ma perché questo “aereo di plastica” potrebbe portare ad una rivoluzione? E in quale segmento di mercato del trasporto aereo la potrebbe portare?
Il Dreamliner è un aeromobile sostanzialmente piccolo per il lungo raggio, adatto dunque alle tratte intercontinentali. In questo segmento particolare del trasporto aereo in questo momento le compagnie aeree operano con un modello detto hub and spoke. In questo modello di business ci sono i voli di feederaggio che alimentano l’hub, in modo che da questo punto possano partire aeromobili diretti a destinazioni intercontinentali con buoni tassi di riempimento. Questo è necessario perché non esiste una domanda particolarmente elevata per trasportare direttamente passeggeri da un punto all’altro del globo. Solo poche rotte, come la Londra – New York, non richiedono il modello hub and spoke perché hanno una domanda sufficiente a riempire gli aerei.
Il nuovo aereo della casa americana invece potrebbe rivoluzionare tale sistema perché riesce a trasportare pochi passeggeri a dei costi molto bassi. È probabile, che dal momento in cui le compagnie aeree integreranno questo aeromobile nella propria flotta, si possano cominciare a vedere dei voli diretti (point to point) anche tra città secondarie, ad esempio tra Milano e Atlanta.
Questo già succede nel breve-medio raggio, dove gli aeromobili Airbus e Boeing, grazie alla loro efficienza, già riescono a servire il mercato tramite il modello point to point.
È tuttavia necessaria un’altra condizione affinché questo nuovo modello di business possa affermarsi. L’esperienza americana prima e quella europea dopo, mostrano che non è sufficiente un avanzamento tecnologico. Infatti il traffico point to point si è sviluppato grazie all’entrata delle compagnie low cost nel momento in cui si è liberalizzato il mercato.
Il mercato intercontinentale non è liberalizzato, ad eccezione di alcuni particolari accordi, come quello vigente tra Stati Uniti ed Europa. L’apertura del mercato porta enormi benefici per i consumatori, accresce la competizione tra le grandi alleanze mondiali presenti nel trasporto aereo e favorisce i cambiamenti nei modelli di business.
L’entrata del Dreamliner è un fattore necessario, ma non sufficiente per cambiare modello di business.
Se veramente si vorrà fare un cambiamento radicale nel trasporto aereo a lunga distanza è necessario che i diversi Governi liberalizzino le rotte intercontinentali.

Complimenti per aver preso ad esempio l' unico collegamento tra Milano e US oltre a New York, per aver citato l' aeroporto che per definizione vive di transiti e rappresenta il miglior esempio mondiale del modello hub & spoke e infine per aver scelto una tratta che non starebbe mai in piedi con il solo point-to-point, salvo che non spunti un 787-42 fabbricato da ATR.

787: Boeing acquista la quota di Alenia in Global Aeronautica

Addio a Charleston per Alenia Aeronautica: la quota di Global Aeronautica controllata dall’azienda di Finmeccanica è stato infatti rilevato da Boeing per un importo non rivelato. Con questa notizia l’intero sito industriale passa nelle mani di Boeing, che ne farà la seconda linea di assemblaggio finale per il 787 Dreamliner. Alenia resta nel programma per la parte di produzione di Grottaglie, da dove le sezioni continueranno ad affluire a Charleston anche sotto la nuova proprietà.
L’annuncio è stato dato dal costruttore americano, che in una dichiarazione di Jim Albaugh, a.d. di Boeing Commercial Airplanes, sottolinea il vantaggio di «unire due solide realtà - compresi i loro validi dipendenti e le officine allo stato dell’arte - in un’unica squadra Boeing.»
Global Aeronautica sarà integrata nel nuovo sito Boeing che sta sorgendo su 97 ettari di terreno a Charleston. La società era stata formata nel 2004 da Alenia North America e Vought Aircraft Industries su base paritetica per integrare e montare le sezioni di fusoliera del 787 costruite dai due soci nei propri stabilimenti. Di fronte alle difficoltà di Vought, Boeing ne aveva rilevata la quota nel 2008. Ora è il turno di Alenia di uscire, ma probabilmente per motivi legati al diverso scenario creatosi con la nascita di del nuovo stabilimento Boeing.
«Siamo orgogliosi del grosso contributo che abbiamo dato al programma 787 e allo stato della Carolina del Sud negli ultimi quattro anni» è il commento ufficiale di Giuseppe Giordo, a.d. di Alenia North America, la controllata di Alenia Aeronautica che deteneva la quota in Global Aeronautica. Boeing ha fatto l’acquisto attraverso una non meglio identificata controllata.

Boeing 787: vola secondo prototipo

È atterrato intorno alle 20.10 ora italiana il secondo prototipo del Boeing 787. L’aereo, dipinto nei colori della giapponese ANA, era decollato dal Paine Field di Everett circa due ore prima pilotato da Randy Neville e Mike Carriker, a parti inverse lo stesso equipaggio del primo volo del 15 dicembre .

Second Boeing 787 Dreamliner Completes First Flight

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The second Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner, ZA002, completed its first flight today. The all-new airplane, which features the livery of the Dreamliner's launch customer, ANA (All Nippon Airways) of Japan, took off from Paine Field in Everett, completed a two-hour flight and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle.
"We are delighted that the second Dreamliner is in the livery of our launch customer, ANA," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We are honored by the airline's support and look forward to delivering ANA the first production airplane next year."
Captain Randy Neville was at the controls for the flight, with Chief Pilot Mike Carriker operating as co-pilot. Neville and Carriker took the airplane to an altitude of 13,000 feet (3,962 m) and an airspeed of 200 knots, or about 230 miles (370 km) per hour. The airplane took off at 9:09 a.m. PST and landed at 11:10 a.m. PST.
This is the second of six 787s being used in the airplane's flight-test program. Each of the airplanes will be used for a specific set of tests, with this airplane focusing on systems performance. Like its predecessor, ZA001, the airplane is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
"We would like to convey our sincere congratulations to the Boeing team for its achievement of this milestone, and we look forward to the delivery into our fleet next year," said Shinichiro Ito, president and CEO of ANA.

ANZ: 787 delay hits harder than recession

Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe told ATWOnline that the continuing uncertainty of the 787 delivery schedule is a more pressing problem for the airline than the global recession and industry downturn.
Fyfe said yesterday that ANZ has had to hold up key expansion plans "because only the 787 is suited to the new routes." It originally was scheduled to take delivery of the first of 16 787s this year but the current schedule now calls for late 2013 with no firm date established. The Dreamliner flew for the first time last month.
"We have had to substantially modify our plans and we may get locked out of a new route if a competitor launches services first," he said, lamenting the delay to an airplane he claimed would be a recession-beater. "I wish we had them now. They would be the perfect tool to weather the downturn. We could have swapped out a 747 for a 787."
Fyfe said that no airline prefers to operate a route less frequently than daily and that the 787 "would have helped airlines a great deal" during the recession by holding down capacity.

With the switch ANA now holds 55 firm orders for the first 787 model.
"As a result there are no longer any 787-3 orders in the backlog. Going forward, we'll continue to assess the market viability of the 787-3," says Boeing vice president of marketing, Randy Tinseth, on the company's blog.

ANA ha un disperato bisogno di rinnovare e ampliare la flotta di LR e fa di tutto per ridurre i già lunghi ritardi di Boeing per le prime consegne del 787. Naturalmente tutto questo ritardo credo che verrà compensato con ulteriori sconti sui prezzi o con altri aerei gratis nell' attesa come aveva fatto Airbus per i ritardi di consegna del A380
 
Il Boeing 787 Dreamliner ha effettuato le sue prime prove di stallo, dimostrando un comportamento molto buono e senza alcuna sorpresa. Lo annuncia oggi Boeing, che ha reso disponibile un video della prova ed una intervista al pilota collaudatore Mike Carriker sul nuovo sito dedicato alle prove di volo del 787, raggiungibile tramite il suo sito tradizionale.

SINGAPORE 2010: Boeing doubtful on 787-3 prospects

A final decision has yet to be made on the future of the short-range Boeing 787-3, but Boeing chief marketeer is bearish on the aircraft's future.
"Let's just be blunt," says Randy Tinseth, Boeing VP of marketing at the Singapore Airshow. "We have no orders for it today, it was an airplane that was designed for the Japanese market."
"I don't think we've made a final decision but I would be hard pressed to tell you that it would be a part of the family going forward."
All Nippon Airways (ANA) became the only customer for the 787-3 when Japan Airlines converted 13 787-3 aircraft to the 787-8 in June of 2009 and later abandoned its order for 28 in favour of the 787-8 in January.
Following the conversion by ANA, Boeing began an assessment of the market viability of the 787-3 which will eventually determine its fate.
ANA is expected to take delivery of its first 787-8 in 2010's fourth quarter following a planned 8.5 month flight test programme to certificate the new long-range twin-engine aircraft that began in December 2009.
Boeing's 787 backlog stands at 851 orders from 56 customers.

Secondo me il 787-3 ha senso sul piano tecnico, meno su quello strategico.
Non ci sarà nessun aereo sul mercato capace di svolgere il ruolo del 787-3 meglio di quanto non potrà fare il il 787-8, quindi (dal punto di vista di Boeing) perchè costruirlo? Probabilmente conviene accordare qualche sconticino extra ai giapponesi e convincerli a prendere il 787-8.
 
First 787 with interiors to fly by month's end

Boeing's first 787 to feature interior components is expected to begin flight tests by the end of February.

The aircraft, ZA003, has been fitted with a partial interior, including instrumentation racks, flight-test equipment and engineer workstations. It features 135 seats, multiple lavatories and two crew rests and provides "a glimpse into the new flying experience the airplane will offer", Boeing said at an unveiling in Everett, Washington.

Certifying the interior components involves analyses and testing of the lighting, lavatories, stowage bins, dimmable windows and galleys. In-flight entertainment (IFE) systems have not been installed on ZA003. Testing of the Panasonic and Thales IFE platforms on offer to 787 customers will not occur until the first production aircraft are equipped with those systems, says Boeing Commercial Airplanes director of 787 interiors, Tom Galantowicz.

Meanwhile, Boeing is sticking to its catalogue approach for customising the 787 interior. "Probably the greatest amount of variability you'll see is in the seating choices they [airlines] make. Some airlines are looking at higher density configurations for their route structure. Some will be in longer haul and might have three classes. When the airline starts making those choices, it starts the snowball effect of the collateral changes they might have. They'll choose the number of galleys they need. The number of lavatories they need. But things like the lighting system, sort of the fundamentals behind the interior, will be a part of every 787," says Galantowicz.

While 787 customers must select economy-class seating from the catalogue, they have the option to make their own decisions on first- and business-class seating.

Delivery of the first 787 to launch customer All Nippon Airways is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

Air Berlin cuts 787 orders by 10 firm, five option aircraft

Air Berlin yesterday announced the cancellation of 10 firm 787 orders worth a combined $1.7 billion at list prices, along with five options, "to account for a change in market conditions and in order to meet. . .specific operative requirements."
The carrier still has 15 Dreamliners and five options remaining from its 2007 order (ATWOnline, July 10, 2007). The cancellations represent the first for the program since TUI Travel eliminated 10 of its 23 787 orders last fall (ATWOnline, Sept. 30, 2009). Boeing sold 25 787s to United Airlines last month but suffered 83 cancellations in 2009 compared to just 24 commitments.
Air Berlin CFO Ulf Huttmeyer stressed that the cancellation was "mutually agreed" with Boeing in a "partnership spirit." He said the airline still "believes in the future of the 787" and that the move "means a significant reduction of its financial obligations due to lower and much more distributed investment profile." AB also deferred the delivery of nine 737s from 2010-11 to 2015. It expects to take its first 787 in November 2015.
CEO Joachim Hunold told ATWOnline last week that the carrier is focusing on its European growth, perhaps a harbinger of a reduction in its long-haul investment (ATWOnline, March 15). Boeing refused comment when asked by this website yesterday in Seattle. AB is scheduled to release its 2009 results on March 25.
