Ryanair could launch direct flights to Niagara Falls. The Irish carrier held talks with tourism authority representatives last week.
The talks between Ryanair and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) took place in Dublin last Friday, the Irish Examiner discloses. The meeting was conducted at the request of the NFTA.
Gregory Stamm, the NFTA's chairman, is enthusiastic about the possibility of direct flights from Ireland for those wishing to holiday near Niagara Falls: "We've got our fingers crossed because they [Ryanair] are a big player over there and landing them would open a lot of doors for us. There's no question there's a market on both ends for these charters. It's more a matter of how this would fit into Ryanair's expansion plans."
It is understood that this is the second time the NFTA has looked into the possibility of flights to Niagara Falls from Ireland. The authority previously held talks with a US travel company.
Ryanair's chief executive, Michael O'Leary has already indicated that he is looking for planes to operate a transatlantic service. He said that any such service would be operated by a Ryanair subsidiary, although he would still be involved in operations.
A transatlantic Ryanair offshoot would require between 50 and 60 long haul aircraft. These would be based at airports in up to 10 European cities, including London and Dublin.
