EVA Air to launch flights to Milan next year

【Economics】2019-03-12 21:23:06

EVA Air to launch flights to Milan next yearTaipei, March 12 (CNA) EVA Air, one of Taiwan's two leading international carriers, will offer a regular service between Taipei and the Italian city of Milan starting next year, the airline's chairman Steve Lin (林寶水) said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after a Spring Festival banquet, Lin said that with fuel prices expected to stabilize, he was upbeat about strong growth of EVA Air's passenger load factor this year.

The airline is planning to add more long-haul destinations to its network, including a regular round-trip service between Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and Milan, he said.

On that route, EVA Air will operate four flights per week, starting in 2020, and tickets are expected to go on sale in the second half of this year, according to Albert Liao (廖至維), executive vice president of EVA's corporate planning division.

Liao said the carrier also plans to expand its European network by offering a service to Germany but he declined to confirm whether Munich would be the destination.

Under an amended bilateral aviation pact in 2009, Taiwan and Italy agreed to offer air services to Milan, in addition to Rome, and allow two airlines in each country to operate seven flights per week, respectively.

EVA Air's main competitor China Airlines is the only Taiwanese carrier that offers flights to Italy. It is allowed to operate five flights a week to the European country but currently offers only three per week between Taoyuan airport and Rome.

Last year, EVA Air announced that it would launch flights to three more destinations in Japan in 2019 -- to Nagoya starting in June and to Aomori and Matsuyama in July.

At the same time, it will increase capacity to Tokyo, Fukuoka, Okinawa and Sendai by adding more flights on its existing routes, the company said.

EVA Air losses from cabin crew strike breach NT$1b mark

EVA Air expects revenue losses from the ongoing cabin crew strike to be around NT$1.07 billion ($34.3 million).
The carrier says in a stock exchange disclosure that it has cancelled 248 flights since 20 June, when the strike began. Other impact costs are still being estimated.
Led by the Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union, the strike comes after the latest negotiations over pay and working conditions with airline management reached an impasse. Two weeks before, the union voted overwhelmingly to take industrial action.
The Star Alliance carrier has also preemptively cancelled 363 flights over the weekend of 29/30 June, which is expected to affect 32,500 passengers.
EVA will not be taking any new bookings until 29 June. FG

Italy says Taiwan flight resumption request 'noted' after virus ban

TAIPEI, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Italy’s de facto embassy in Taiwan said on Wednesday that it has “noted” the island’s request for a speedy resumption of air ties, after the Italian government stopped direct flights having included Taiwan as part of China in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Taiwan was angered last week when Italy suddenly suspended flights by Taiwan’s flag carrier China Airlines between Taipei and Rome, and has sought for the ban to be lifted.
Italy has stopped all flights between the country and China, as well as the Chinese cities of Hong Kong and Macau and Chinese-claimed Taiwan to stop the spread of the virus.
Taiwan has only reported 11 cases, compared to more than 24,000 in China, but as the World Health Organization considers self-ruled Taiwan part of China, it has included it in its advice that China is “very high risk”.

Taiwan’s government has complained that the Italians erroneously included the island due to the World Health Organization’s designation of the island as part of China.

Making the first official response, the Italian Economic, Trade and Cultural Promotion Office in Taipei wrote on its Facebook page that the suspension of flights did not mean Taiwanese citizens would not longer be able to visit Italy.

“While the inconvenience for the above mentioned extraordinary measure is regretted, this Office would like to acknowledge the messages that have been addressed here over the past few days,” it wrote.
The mission would like to “assure that the request for a speedy resumption of full and regular air connections between Taiwan and Italy has been noted and also brought to the attention of the competent Italian government authorities”.
Italy, like most countries, has no official ties with Taiwan and only recognises the government in Beijing not Taipei.

Over the weekend Vietnam had also suspended all flights from Taiwan, but Taiwan’s government managed to get that ban overturned within a few hours.
Taiwan has complained repeatedly that the WHO is playing politics with the island over the virus outbreak, listing incorrect information and refusing to allow Taiwanese experts into virus-related meetings.
The WHO says Taiwan is being given all the access and help it needs, but has not directly addressed Taiwan’s complaints about including its virus numbers under China’s.
