Se quanto riportato sotto è corretto, soprattutto nei tempi, mi sembra una cosa abbastanza inquietante.
Sarei curioso di avere qualche opinione esperta.
SQ Plane makes unscheduled stop at KL for refuel
I took a flight today from Jakarta to Singapore on Singapore Airlines SQ 953. The flight per its schedule was to arrive in Singapore at 4.50 pm. Due to late take off, the new arrival time was 5.40 pm.
During the course of the flight, at 5.10 pm, the Captain announced that they are descending into Singapore. At 5.25 pm, the Captain announced that due to "congestion" at Changi Airport, the air traffic controllers had advised him to "hold" his position. Then at 5.50 pm, the Captain made a alarming announcement. He said that there continued to be congestion at Changi airport and the time slot given to him was too long. The fuel situation may not be enough for the alloted landing slot. He then announced that he is flying to KL for refuel as the fuel is low.
The plane landed at KL at 6.30 pm and refuelled. It return and landed in Singapore at 8.27 pm.
There are three concerns here:
1. The quantity of spare fuel carried by SQ Planes. This is a short haul flight of 1 hr 20 mins, so the fuel consumption cannot be too much as to drain the whole tanks. Given that congestions at major airports are common occurences these days, due to weather related or busy schedules, what happened today that is the delay experienced in getting a landing slot with SQ 953 cannot be a "unexpected" situation. So, how is it that the "fuel level" cannot sustain the wait? What is SQ fuel policy?
The delay experienced by the plane today was a mere 10 mins before the pilot made the decision to head for KL (Landing was supposed to be 5.40 pm, pilot made the decision at 5.50 pm, only 10 mins difference).
2. Was the Air Traffice control made to be aware of the fuel position of SQ 953? Whats the policy in this situation? Can a plane low on fuel be allowed to "jump queue". What will happen if KL airport is closed for some reasons at last minute?
3. Was it a right or wrong pilot judgement call? He claimed after landing in KL that he made the call for safety reasons as the fuel may not last the wait to the landing slot. What are the factors that influnced his decision?
I hope SQ also realise the anxiety of the people on the ground waiting for their love ones to land. These people have no way of knogin why the plane has not land. The people on the plane cannot make calls to the love ones until the plane lands in KL. Try to imagine the fear on the love ones when there is no news about when the plane is landing or where the plane is!
SQ is a premium airline, charging preium prices. Surely you can explain yourself.
