Airline Virgin Atlantic is to employ 500 new cabin crew under plans to expand its network and fleet for 2012.

The jobs will be based London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The extra posts are being created for Virgin Atlantic's new routes to Cancun and Vancouver, as well as other long-haul network destinations such as New York, Barbados, Las Vegas and Shanghai.
The airline is also set to take delivery of seven new A330-300 aircraft later in the year.
Virgin Atlantic's chief executive, Steve Ridgeway. said it was "very tough out there" but that there were some small signs of encouragement in the UK economy.
"Many companies in the private sector are trying to grow their business," he told the BBC.
He added that the firm's January bookings had been encouraging.

Virgin Atlantic hires cabin crew as Thomson culls jobs

Virgin Atlantic gave a much-needed boost to the economy by announcing plans to create 500 cabin crew jobs this year as it expands its network and fleet.

However, the uplift to the airline industry was short-lived as rival Thomson Airways announced it had started consulting staff over redundancies, which unions fear could add up to 600 job cuts. Thomson said it was entering into a 90-day consultation with cabin crew employees this month, which would result in job losses as the airline attempted to "become more efficient". The airline is replacing Boeing 757s when they come up for renewal with the Boeing 737-800, which requires fewer cabin staff on board, the company said. Unite the union said the jobs cull at Thomson was a blow to the workforce during a time of economic uncertainty, and called on the company to steer clear of compulsory redundancies.

Sir Richard Branson's airline, however, had better news for staff. It launched a recruitment drive for 500 cabin crew, based out of London Heathrow and Gatwick airports, to cover new routes to Cancun and Vancouver plus other long-haul destinations including New York, Barbados and Shanghai.
