Malta to lose 1M Pax and 1,000 jobs if Tourism Chiefs ignore Ryanair

Ryanair, Europe’s largest low fares airline, today (19th May) confirmed that its has provided the Malta Tourism Authority with a proposal to deliver in excess of 1 million additional passengers, creating at least 1,000 jobs and adding a much needed €275 million p.a. in tourism revenues by basing two Ryanair aircraft in Malta in order to reverse the island’s declining tourism figures.

Ryanair called on the Malta Tourism Authority to work with Ryanair to protect Malta tourism with the opening of a Ryanair base and the promotion of the island internationally. Ryanair is the only airline to continue to grow passenger traffic thanks to its guaranteed lowest fares and no fuel surcharges. Ryanair confirmed that while passenger traffic is falling in Malta, Ryanair continues to grow. Ryanair based operations would dramatically increase this passenger growth if it was supported by Malta Tourism Authority.
 
Quando sono andato io a Malta c'erano già più aerei Ryanair che giravano nel piazzale che AirMalta. Si tratterà giusto di rivedere i giri macchina :D.

Ormai la presenza Ryanair su Malta è considerevole. Forza Autorità del turismo maltese tanto $ più $ meno cosa volete che sia :D

ottimo!!! speriamo presto in un malta-bgy viste le tariffe da furto di airmalta!
 
Attualmente ryanair per un accorto fatto con le autorità maltesi (visti tutti i soldi che si prende) non può mettere i voli in diretta concorrenza con AirMalta.

Quindi niente volo su Roma o Milano che sarebbero sicuramente due successi.

Magari se aprono una base potrebbe cambiare qualcosa

Se Milano non può essere scelto, in caso di base a Malta un VBS lo vedrei bene.
 
le rotte credo siano decise di comune accordo tra lo sponsor, l'agenzia del turismo maltese, e FR, quindi direi che rimangono escluse tutte le tratte che potrebbero fare concorrenza diretta o indiretta a Airmalta. Di tratte internazionali non coperte da airmalta o charters credo ce ne siano ancora diverse.

The airline started flying to Malta in 2006 and so far is bringing 545,000 passengers every year, spending e136 million in the Maltese economy.

Although a press conference addressed yesterday by Ken O’Toole, head of Route Development at the airline, did not mention the new possible routes, a slide presentation they showed pointed out what the Ryanair officials called ‘possible’ destinations: Bournemouth, Paris, Birmingham, Stansted London, Brussels, Krakow, Turin, Bologna, Naples, Milan, Seville and Valencia.Some of these routes are at present served by Air Malta.

Mr O’Toole, who had just come from a meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco and MTA, said the indications given by the Maltese side were very positive. Although no deadlines were given, the airline needs a definitive answer quite quickly as it wants to start planning for next winter. The new routes could start operations as early as next October.

Given the current decline in tourist numbers, it is clear Ryanair’s offer must be very attractive to the government. However, it is the airline’s demands that may well prove problematic to the government.

Ryanair believes that MIA costs are too high and it wants a substantial discount, accessible to all airlines, according to the volume of passengers carried. On the other hand, it also feels that where no growth is registered, there should be no support forthcoming.

Funds to seed the base and the new routes, Mr O’Toole insisted, could come from the existing market spend, since, according to him, present advertising is clearly not working.

MIA’s charges are equivalent to three times what it costs Ryanair to fly to Malta, Mr O’Toole contended – e25 per passenger against e7.

Furthermore, he added, Ryanair is seeking to open routes to the North African coastline, with Tunisia being probably the first country to reach agreement in the coming months. A Ryanair base in Malta could easily be structured to enable flights to these countries.

Other possible targets of Ryanair expansion include the Balkans, Turkey and East Europe. One other target is Israel where Malta as a base would be perfectly based, he added.

Ryanair had the greatest growth last year in all Europe, adding nine million passengers to a total of 67 million passengers, served by 800 routes and 32 bases. The coming annual results, due on 2 June, will show this is the 25th year of continuous growth. (The Malta Indipendent)

Molto strano.. Di certo non credo proprio che FR, nel caso sbarchi in un prossimo futuro a NAP, aprirebbe innanzitutto un volo per Malta.

Il fatto è che in questi anni avrebbe potuto benissimamente operare su NAP da altre basi importanti.. come appunto farebbero nel caso di MLA (notizia ovviamente tutta da verificare).

Che sia davvero prossimo l'arrivo di FR a NAP? Speriamo :D

Se aprono la TRN-MLA senza aprire la BGY-MLA penso che per la prima volta avremo un flusso di milanesi che verrranno a prendere l'aereo da TRN, visto il monopolio e i prezzi cari di AirMalta per non parlare degli operativi pessimi.
